/usr/bin/gcc is a symlink to /etc/alternatives/gcc
/etc/alternatives/gcc is a symlink to the gcc that's to be used.  In this
case it is /usr/bin/gcc-2.96

ln -sfv /etc/alternatives/gcc /usr/bin/gcc
ln -sfv /usr/bin/gcc-2.96 /etc/alternatives/gcc

man updates-alternatives, i'll put some docs (coming from Debian) in
the rpm rpm.
