Would also like to confirm that the savage_drv.o from
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html also fixes the problem on an ibm
thinkpad (tested on a T21, T22 and T23).

I'm running Mandrake Linux on it since 8.1 and without any problem with the 9.0.

here is the problem: when I select S3 SavageMX during the installation and try
to test it, the graphical window begins to appear, first a black empty window

nothing else, the window stay black. I can move the cursor on the screen but
there isn't anything else dispayed.

After some more 'bricolage' I've installed the binaries (1.1.27t) from:
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html

Everything works now without problems.

I think I have another instance of this bug. Installed 9.1 final this morning,
configured X, with the savage_s3 with sw_cursor against a sgi gdm5411 on
dockingstation for my ibm thinkpad T21 with savage/mx. X would not start
correctly upon test or reboot, same error as post #12 in X log file;

SAVAGE(0) Failed to Fetch an BIOS modes. Disable BIOS.

I can get a graphical login by keeping the laptop lid open but X crashes and
locks up after 10 mins or so. Never had this problem with any mandrake (8.0 -
9.0 inc).

Cheers

-Matt

I guess the problem still exists in the released version of Mandrake 9.1
I'm using an ASUS L8400 notebook, which has the Savage/Mx well.
When installing from scratch, I'm getting the black screen mentioned above when
testing the X configuration. Besides this the XF86 log returns an error:
(EE) SAVAGE(0) Failed to Fetch an BIOS modes. Disable BIOS.
When upgrading from a 9.0 installation I've got is to work ... at least for a
limited time. So far it worked until I switched to the KDE login manager (this
would not be the root cause). Switching back to the Mandrake login manager gave
me at least some icons back (non X login (runlevel 3) and startx) home, CD and
floppy
on a total black background.
Haven't seen this with previous versions of Mandrake (switched from SuSE to
Mandrake 7.2).

Rgds,
Marc

I have finally found an X-Server that works with my Toshiba 8100. I had to use
Savage/sw_cursor and X is as solid as ever. I don't know what sw_cursor is but it
seems that I now need it. This is on cooker from Saturday 3/22/2003.

Created an attachment (id=286)
 -- (http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/attachment.cgi?id=286action=view)
This is the XF86config file. I don't know if this is needed.

This is on an updated cooker as of 3/6/2003.

I have a repeatable pattern that happens when I get invisible windows. (as per
my previous comment)

1.) go to tty1 run Drakconf and setup the Xserver to use 3.3.6
2.) Reboot
3.) The Xserver tries to start up but it keeps dying. It does this about 5-6
times then drops down to a console.
4.) Run Drakconf again and set the Xserver up to use 4.3.
5.)Reboot
6.) I now get a working Xserver.
7.) Reboot.
8.) I am now back to invisable windows.

The XF86config doesn't change between the working Xserver boots and the not
working Xserver boots.

I had the Same Issue but I might have more information.
I am on a Toshiba Tecra 8100 with the Savage mx
I got the same black screen in the test when I setup Xfree during instalation. I
thought since I saw the cursor that I was good and proceded witht the installation.
On boot up I got the background and the cursor, nothing else. One thing of note is
that the cursor did change to the pointing hand when it was above where the
usernames are listed to click. so I clicked and it seemed to work. The cursor now
changed to the text insert cursor when I was above where the password should be
entered. I tried to login but I don't know if I was successful because it seems all
windows are transparent.
It seems that the windows are not being drawn. I do seem to have 4 white dots
outlining something but I can't get this to do anything.

This was with Xfree86 4.2.99 (The latest on the RC1 CD). The black test screen
showed up al all bitdepths and screen resolutions as well as using the
savage(generic) as well as the savage/mx drivers.
I found that using Xfree86 3.3.6 does work (I'm using this laptop right now)
Now if I can urpmi --auto-select successfully to the latest cooker I can try the
latest,
but alas: I get Installation failed:
libsasl%{major} is needed by cyrus-sasl-2.1.10-3mdk
but that is another bug..
Happy Hunting

will
check this bug out later) but doing this I was able to get XFree86 4.2.99 running.
