I had the same problem when using UTF-8 (i didn't even know it, changing language with gdm use a locale with UTF-8). Please post the output of the "locale" command. If it displays some UTF-8, try : "export LANG=en_EN; soundwrapper xmms" and report if it works. You should file a bug report against libgtk+1.2 if you have font problems with gtk, providing your locale settings and a list of your installed fonts. The file browser problem is more likely releated to the NTFS driver of the kernel.
