Ah, ok, right: I can reproduce it with xmms and gimp, it seems to
be directly related to gtk+1.2.

Pablo: I'm afraid that our decision to split lang and country
choice, setting UTF8 if encodings are different, is causing us
much UTF8-related trouble..

Hello,

I've just installed RC2. First I noticed that font in xmms (and other gtk1 apps)
is too big, second the file dialog was not able to browse dir tree correctly. On
the roght list, where should be only files, I got the entries like this:
../mp3/David Bowie - Lodger/01.mp3
along with the files from some othe directory I did not chose.
The files was placed on ntfs partition.

So here are my locales, I didn't change them after installation:

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=sk_SK.UTF-8
LC_TIME=en_US.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=en_US.UTF-8
LC_MONETARY=sk_SK.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES=en_US.UTF-8
LC_PAPER=sk_SK.UTF-8
LC_NAME=sk_SK.UTF-8
LC_ADDRESS=sk_SK.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=sk_SK.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=sk_SK.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=sk_SK.UTF-8
LC_ALL=

I have made 2 screenshots
http://www.fi.muni.cz/~xhalasa/bugs/snapshot1.png
http://www.fi.muni.cz/~xhalasa/bugs/snapshot2.png
The first is just about large font and the second shows the wrong directory
listing (now on fat32). I'm quite sure it's the problem of parsing the path in
utf8 because it did not occure when I changed the locale by setting:
export LANG=sk
export LC_ALL=sk_SK
This solved also the problem with huge font.

(My question was for Jan).

AFAIK (although I'm no UTF8 expert), if the system was not
installed in fr_FR.UTF-8, doing what you do (for an example)
don't provide a working UTF-8 environment.

I can :

$ export LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8
$ xmms
$ gimp
$ sylpheed

After I export LANG=fr_FR, everything is normal.

Can you reproduce the problem, under XMMS? Can you reproduce the
problem with another gtk1 app?

Hum, fonts in gtk1 apps should work better in cooker now.

This may have come from that, because I never heard such a
problem and ntfs is known to be much problematic.

Concerning font size, it must be a UTF-8 related problem.
I had the same problem when using UTF-8 (i didn't even know it, changing
language with gdm use a locale with UTF-8).
Please post the output of the "locale" command.
If it displays some UTF-8, try : "export LANG=en_EN; soundwrapper xmms" and
report if it works.
If using gdm, removing UTF-8 from ~/.gnome2/gdm should helpĀ·

Kernel NTFS driver seems to work fine, I can access and browse the partition
from shell and konqueror without problems.

This are two different things, both unrelated to xmms.

You should file a bug report against libgtk+1.2 if you have font problems with
gtk, providing your locale settings and a list of your installed fonts.

The file browser problem is more likely releated to the NTFS driver of the
kernel. Can you access the dirs with a file manager or the shell?
