yes, when I started mformat from the command line the text output was
identical to the output shown in the floppy formatter error dialog.

Sorry, can't check until this weekend, which is probably too late.
But as I said the problem stands or falls with the 'user' option for
/mnt/floppy in fstab, so it's not critical.

Found a workaround: add the 'user' option for /mnt/floppy in fstab. This should
be the default, IMHO. No way a newbie is going to find this out himself.
