[Cooker] [Bug 5175] [mc] unacceptably long startup time

On boot to runlevel 1 there is no startup delay. I removed read and exec
permissions from /usr/sbin/drakeupdate_fstab, and the startup delay after
runlevel 3 boot was eliminated.

I can't remember. I haven't stopwatched it, but if started immediately upon 1st
login after boot, it must be taking at least one minute, a seeming eternity,
both in 9.1 and 9.2rc1. Upon entering mc at shell prompt, the screen is blanked,
cursor goes to bottom left, and nothing happens for a while. Eventually, some
liblow error messages quickly scroll up the screen too fast to read, and mc
becomes ready to use.

Hardware is rather old, P200 for rc1, with 128 MB RAM & PCI graphics card, but
immaterially better on K6/2-500 with 256 MB RAM and same graphics adapter for
9.1, and on a P3-450 with 768 MB RAM and G450 graphics adapter..

These are what was showing up among the top 10 or so that never used more CPU
than top:
part.script
init
keventd
kapmd
ksoftirqd_CPU0
kswapd
bdflush
kupdated
kinoded

These used more CPU than top:
devfsd (up to 50%, but usually less than top)
drakeupdat_fsta (up to 97.7%, dropping sometimes to only about 60%)

The last pretty steadily stayed above top at very high CPU.

output of ps is not usefull, as it doesn't show cpu usage of each apps.

Try running top in another console and check yourself if an app is slowing your
CPU (but I'm not sure it is the case).

Created an attachment (id=892)
 --> (http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/attachment.cgi?id=892&action=view)
output of 'ps -A' on 9.2 cooker box

AFAICR, whatever is automatically starting on boot has not been changed by me
from what the installer set up, except the choice of display manager, plus
adding gpm from comment 23 URL as requested. The ps -A listing was done
immediately upon boot and login as root on vc1. Only after ps -A did I start
mc, which took about 110 seconds.

Security (AFAIK) on this cooker box is as follows:
1-During install, the default security level (minimum?) was accepted
2-During install, no users were added after providing the root password
3-After install, one user was added: 'useradd -u 500 someuser', then 'passwd -d
someuser'
4-After install, kdebase-kdm was installed and made active via
DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm in /etc/sysconfig/desktop.
5-After kdebase-kdm was made login manager, I logged into X as root and
configured kdm via KDE Control Center, changing info on tabs "Users" and
"Convenience". a-I unhid root. b-I changed User Image Source to "User, admin".
c-I changed User Images for user someuser to ic-tux.png. d-I changed Preselect
User to "Previous". e-I checked "Focus password". f-I checked the box "Enable
password-less logins".

If you want more info, please tell me how to get what you want.

Please, stop ranting people who try to help you..

Again, I try to duplicate this problem and I couldn't, even after boot.

And you haven't respond to my question where I was asking you to check what
programs were running when you are running a "long to respond" mc ?

What are your security settings ? (/me hopes it is not an msec problem...)

"you didn't say if you had rebooted or not."

Buchan, have *you* tried mc immediately upon boot? That's an *absolute*
requirement to see the problem at its extreme. Once a couple minutes or so have
passed since boot, the delay is gone. So, yes, I did say, though implicitly,
that I had rebooted, since that is how the problem gets seen at all.

Buchan, I previously wrote here that the problem exists on many mdk 9.1 and
cooker 9.2 installs. It happens/happened on EVERY one I've done, including
several of cooker on one machine, and one or more on at least 5 other machines,
including yet another of 9.1 only last night, and one that I personally did not
do. It simply doesn't matter whether gpm is running or not on any of them.
You're simply choosing to ignore that this is anything but an isolated incident,
that so many installs can exhibit the same broken behavior.

Who said anything about that??? We're just trying to see if it has an effect or not.

Well, who says Redhat and SuSE build mc with gpm support?

> In comment 25 I said I installed gpm. That put it in /etc/rc.d/init.d, which
> NAICT means the lack of improvement after installing gpm meant no improvment

It having an init script in /etc/rc.d/init.d doesn't necessarily mean it starts
at boot, and you didn't say if you had rebooted or not.

But it seems like you know more about mc, gpm, mandrake than anyone, and you
don't want to try what other people suggest, so I don't see why I should waste
my time - hopefully the maintainer can fix this, but mc works fine on all the
machines I have tried it on.

Depends on a package and compatibility with a package should not be equivalent.
I have no problem with it working with a mouse, just a big problem for it to
depend on a package I don't need.

As I said, it works fine in SuSE 8.1 with no gpm running or even installed.
In RedHat 9, I did 'chkconfig --level 2 gpm off' and rebooted to runlevel 2. Mc
still works fine there, so I doubt gpm has anything material to do with this bug.

FWIW, mc-4.5.46-1mdk in Mandrake 7.1 works fine too.

In comment 25 I said I installed gpm. That put it in /etc/rc.d/init.d, which
NAICT means the lack of improvement after installing gpm meant no improvment
with gpm running.

Maybe other people do? I have no use for a ZIP drive, does that mean it should
not be supported?

> Why should mc depend on gpm?

Who knows, but would you just try for once with gpm running, and see if it is
related to the problem? (it doesn't seem you have tried with it running)

Or, maybe you don't want others to help try and find the cause of the problem

(mc works fine for me, with gpm running or not, but I just thought it might
affect you)

Felix, this has nothing to do with the kernel, since it works fine on all
Mandrake kernels I have ever run mc on.

But, I usually have gpm running. Do you have it running? Was it running on
Redhat and SuSE?

#/etc/init.d/gpm stop
/etc/init.d/gpm: no such file or directory.

"Are you sure your system is not busy doing something else or than network is
already working properly ? Running top in another console might be helpful.."

Whatever it may be busy doing is something set up to be doing by the Mandrake
9.1 and 9.2 installation programs. As I have repeatedly written, IMMEDIATELY
upon availability of login prompt, IMMEDIATELY upon booting, the FIRST thing I
do upon logging in is 'mc', on tty1. Anything else that may be going on has
nothing to do with anything I did, other than in package selection and
configuration during install. This ALWAYS happens on EVERY install on EVERY
system since 9.0.

"The way startup is done now is causing X server to be displayed before all
services are started and running."

I have noticed this, and don't understand why it happens. I wish X would start
only after all other services have been started.

login after boot, it must be taking at least one minute, a seeming eternity,
both in 9.1 and 9.2rc1. Upon entering mc at shell prompt, the screen is blanked,
cursor goes to bottom left, and nothing happens for a while. Eventually, some
liblow error messages quickly scroll up the screen too fast to read, and mc
becomes ready to use.

Hmm, stew, I'm not sure your patch will fix this problem, since it fixes libgpm
code AFTER connect and it seems connect is the one which is causing problem (I'm
not 100% sure of that, it might be code just after that call)..

Fred L, could you have a look at libgpm ?

I tried to put this in the bug, but qa.mandrakesoft.com has become
unreachable.

#/etc/init.d/gpm stop

FWIW, I had another conversation with a cdialog user, where his dialog
scripts exhibited similar behavior, when gpmd isn't running. cdialog is
built against libgpm, as is mc I believe.

Applying this patch to gpm solved his issue:

Ok, it seems to be caused by "connect (..., "/dev/gpmctl)" which is taking 2
minutes to timeout..

Are you sure your system is not busy doing something else or than network is
already working properly ? Running top in another console might be helpful..

It could be also a gpm problem..

Try running /etc/init.d/gpm stop before running mc to see if this fixes the
problem..

The way startup is done now is causing X server to be displayed before all
services are started and running..

strace -o /tmp/mc.log -tt mc on 500 MHz 9.1 K6/2 system

Please remember that this happens immediately on fresh boot, and never when
sufficiently later. When you have waited instead of trying immediately, then
the delay is not present, only the liblow errors.

Also, this happens/happened on every system tested, about 8 systems altogether,
and none faster than 550 MHz, and all of which take in the neighborhood of 3+
minutes just to boot Mandrake 9.1 or cooker directly into KDE by way of the
login manager.

Fresh strace from 200 MHz cooker system coming up.

I can't fixed this for 9.2 because I can't reproduce on my test system..

Anyway, could you try to upload a new trace with
strace -o /tmp/mc.log -tt mc

this will add timestamp and might help to understand why it is so slow on your
system..

Bug was marked needinfo 17 days ago, to which I promptly replied with more info.
What more is required to get this fixed? mc worked properly in 7.1, works
properly in RedHat. Why can't it be made to work properly in 9.2?

I just rsync'd cooker fresh around 23:00 EDT, again installed to formatted /,
reused /home & /boot. mc-4.6.0-4 took 1 minute 50 seconds to ready on start
immediately on root login immediately on boot.

prolly a linking issue

After starting mc on last boot, after freshly updating from cooker, and seeing
no indication of any improvement, I immediately switched to tty2, logged in
again, and did ps -A. Maybe those results would provide clues to those in the know:

1457 bash

I rsync'd sunet.se cooker a couple hours ago, then updated via floppy boot,
leaving me on kernel 2.4.22-6. This now brings my total installs and/or updates
exhibiting this bug to about 10. Surely I can't be the only one seeing this.

I booted a while ago without logging in on tty1 for a long time. When I logged
in root and started mc, it more or less started right up, scrolling error
messages too fast to read. However, there remains one on screen:

 *** err [liblow.c(371)]:

I looked around in /var/log, but failed to find any of these messages captured
anywhere.

Machine was freshly cobbled together out of spare parts for the express purpose
of testing 9.2 betas. Previously, it did not have any Linux version installed.
9.2rc1 would not install on it, so I installed 9.1,
fixed /etc/grub/menu.lst, fixed /etc/fstab, and upgraded to 9.2rc1. There has
been nothing special done to this system that wasn't part of the installation
processes. Only non-default user is 501.

Intel VX chipset, Pentium MMX 200, 128 MB EDO, 53c8xx SCSI, realtek8139, ET6000
4 MB, 4 GB /dev/hda, 9 GB /dev/sda, atapi CD on /dev/hdc. Also, /dev/scd0
powered off and disconnected after install complete.

All other systems with this mc problem were 450-550 MHz, and did/do not
materially differ in performance starting mc.

mc startup has actually been fubar since at least 9.0, possibly before that, but
I can't remember.

>From the strace it looks like it might be waiting for user information from nss.

Do you use NIS? LDAP? Winbind? nscd? What do you get with:
$ time getent passwd |wc -l
when you boot up the first time? What do you get a few minutes later?

If the time is not significant and it returns all your users, please test
hostname resolution also:
$ time getent hosts `hostname`

We use LDAP/NFS, on my first login, mc takes about 15 seconds to load (with my
user login, with a large home directory on NFS). As root on first boot, mc
starts up in 3 seconds. 1GHz Duron/256MB.

This looks seriously like it's user enumeration timeouts, with a long wait in
between reading some passwd-type data:
read(10, "root:x:0:\nbin:x:1:\ndaemon:x:2:\ns"..., 4096) = 503
and showing a directory listing:
write(1, "7m\33[44m-rw-r--r-- 1 root ro"..., 1301) = 1301

Further on, there is a long timeout while finding root's home to read the config
files:
open("/root/.mc/history", O_RDONLY|O_CREAT|O_EXCL|O_LARGEFILE, 0600) = -1 EEXIST
(File exists)

You may also want to post your /etc/nsswitch.conf

Created an attachment (id=728)
 --> (http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/attachment.cgi?id=728&action=view)
strace of mc

I have no idea what anything in this means, but I must remind that this problem
is manifested on at least 5 different machines, and also that waiting after
boot seems to have a 1 to 1 relationship to startup time reduction. IOW, don't
start mc for a couple minutes after booting, and it will start right up, just
like it should immediately after boot and login.

This sounds like more a kernel supermount/nfs/you name it problem..

Try running mc in strace to see why it is so slow..

I just switched to tty1, logged in as root, did "urpmi mc" then immediately
"mc". Loaded instantaneously.

Fast as light is how it used to be for me too, like in 7.1 or 8.1, or if started
after machine has been up a while. What info do you want?

To reproduce:
1-Boot runlevel 3
2-Immediately login root as soon as prompt is available.
3-Immediately do 'mc' as soon as login succeeds.

Time to mc ready:
9.1 on K6/2-500: 2 minutes + 8 seconds
9.2rc1 on Pentium MMX 200: 1 minute + 56 seconds

To reproduce (alternate):
1-Boot runlevel 5
2-Immediately switch to tty1 when kdm appears
3-Immediately login root as soon as prompt is available.
4-Immediately do 'mc' as soon as login succeeds.

Time to me ready:
9.1 on K6/2-500: 1 minute + 55 seconds
9.2rc1 on Pentium MMX 200: 1 minute + 45 seconds

More comments:
The 9.2rc1 machine was upgraded from 9.1, but only because 9.2rc1 would not
install on it fresh.

Performance was similar on two other machines besides these two, covering 6-7
installs of 9.1 & 9.2rc1.
