However, kdm shows all users, and it is perfectly feasible to use a linux machine without a valid shell (if the admin doesn't want you to get lost ;-)). So, I think there should be an option to remove the requirement for a valid shell (if there isn't one). I have also tried the new patch and there is no difference. I'm only interested in two NIS login accounts appearing, both have valid shells. This might be a configuration issue regarding how GDM gets the NIS info, but I can't think what it might be. One oddity I have found is that the 'ypcat passwd' command no longer lists the NIS password file when run as a normal user. One has to be root to list the entries. Could this be related? Edward, I think something is wrong on your system, ypcat passwd should ALWAYS give you the info, even when using security level 5..
