Work fine here on an NIS/NFS system with gdm 2.4.4.0-2mdk

The Browser part allows a user to click on their user icon to select the account
to log in to.

Unfortunately, ulike kdm, it does not show NIS accounts in the browser. If you
type the user's account name in manually however, it _is_ possible to log in.

I have updated all installed packages to the latest version. Maybe this is a
Kernel 2.6.x issue.

Running 2.4.22.9mdk on current cooker, I don't see all LDAP users in the user
browser (but we normally don't use things like this for security reasons).

The funny thing is that it does show *some* users who are in LDAP and not the
passwd file ... I have gdm-2.4.4.0-2mdk

I think it might be caused by gdm not escaping correctly user with non UTF-8
gecos infos..

Could you try gdm package from http://people.mandrakesoft.com/~fcrozat/gdm/ ?

Fred, it doesn't change matters, but it may be a "feature", since it seems it is
only showing users with a valid shell.

However, kdm shows all users, and it is perfectly feasible to use a linux
machine without a valid shell (if the admin doesn't want you to get lost ;-)).
So, I think there should be an option to remove the requirement for a valid
shell (if there isn't one).

However, I don't think this is a Mandrake bug ... so I think we need a report
from Edward Tandi on a stable system ...

I have now tried this on Mandrake 9.2 with the 2.4.22-10mdk-i686-up-4GB kernel
and the result is he same (no NIS accounts listed).

I have also tried the new patch and there is no difference. I'm only interested
in two NIS login accounts appearing, both have valid shells.

This might be a configuration issue regarding how GDM gets the NIS info, but I
can't think what it might be.

One oddity I have found is that the 'ypcat passwd' command no longer lists the
NIS password file when run as a normal user. One has to be root to list the
entries. Could this be related? Are there any new security restrictions?

well, for me, it is clearly not a bug (ie not showing users which can't be used
to login)..

Edward, I think something is wrong on your system, ypcat passwd should ALWAYS
give you the info, even when using security level 5.. This would explain why gdm
doesn't show your NIS accounts..

'But 'ypcat passwd' works as root and I _can_ log in. And as I mentioned
earlier, kdm does show the NIS accounts.

So it may be configuration, but if it is, it will be something quite subtle.

This is NOT the point : kdm and login are running as ROOT, so they don't have
permissions problems.. I'm almost sure GDM won't work until you get your NIS
setup fixed to work for ALL users (ie ypcat password)
