Not rc4 is rc3 + a small patch needed only for non x86, 2.4.19-pre1 is
_way_ more than rc4. I am trying to get the obvious bugfixes for
2.4.18-2mdk

Wrong, 2.4.19-pre1 is not same as 2.4.18-rc4, there are additional
fixes so 2.4.17-21mdk does not have 2.4.19-pre1, read the 19-pre1
changelog, these are changes that were queued for inclusion in 19-pre1
when 2.4.18 became final.

-rc4 contained a fix that affected some non-X86 archs, that was all that
-rc4 was. It was left out of 2.4.18 final by mistake. 2.4.19-pre1 has
it, 2.4.18-ac1 and 2.4.19-pre1-ac1 have it.

Good till here.

Nope. The change from -rc3 to -rc4 was just a 3-line fix. So Marcelo
included it in 19-pre1, apart from other things.

So:
2.4.17-21mdk == 2.4.18 + the-binfmt-fix-lost
(even better than plain 2.4.18)

That was my initial point, all that is needed in Cooker to have 2.4.18
is to *change the name* of the current kernel, and change the version
names in the Makefile.

hey people
have someone read the postings on lkml

2.4.18
the full tarbal is 2.4.18-rc4
the patch is 2.4.18-rc3
Marcelo Tosati (the current 2.4.x maintainer ) made a mistake while
preparing the patch

there is pretty big thread on lkml

Basically, here's what happened (as I understand it, so I could be
massively wrong). Marcelo released 2.4.18-rc4. Mandrake's developers
incorporate it into .17-21mdk (why the switch to .21mdk, btw?). Marcelo
decides that 2.4.18 is ready and accidentally (I imagine) copies
2.4.18-rc3 instead of -rc4 to be the new 2.4.18. Marcelo copies
2.4.18-rc4 over to 2.4.19-pre1.

So, for all intents and purposes, 2.4.17-21mdk is 2.4.19-pre1, plus any
patches Mandrake's developers have added.

I myself am going to try a kernel from the mjc tree... I want to see
what the fuss over pre-emption, the O(1) scheduler, et al is all
about...

2.4.19-pre1 is out now.

I dunno what MDK kernels relate to what - they don't work on my box.
