There is no need for it now since the LG released
 updates for their
firmware and procedure how to fix the dead drives.
It would be nice if Mandrake would release updated
 iso-s for
club members or a howto on how to do it ourselves.
btw does this mean that the updated kernel is not
 necessary ?
Are there any changes in the updated kernel except
 the packet writing
 being left out ?

There are other fixes such as the issue with Phillips
webcams freezing Mandrake (see errata).

But that certainly doesn't need a new ISO.

LG has finally released their errata and fix for their drives.

Are these updated with the newest kernel? Do they have other updates
integrated with them?

Is there a changelog for differences between the original and the new

Well, yes, it's empty ;p
There isn't any difference between the old ISOs and the new ones.

yes, but they released it only for LG branded devices,
many of these CD drives are OEM branded, and not supported.
do these fix work on them?
has mandrake recevied any response from OEM (DELL,HP,IBM)?

What, do we want:
1)Paying customers to have worse products than freeloaders?
2)Users to keep their vulnerable firmware?

The best solution for everyone is for users to update their firmware.

The best time for them to wipe their firmware (if you can qualify it as
best, maybe least-bad) is now, when there are documented fixes for it.

Hopefully users caught by the same problem on other Linux kernels
(Gentoo America's Army CD, some other Gentoo releases, custom-patched
etc etc) will find the solution too (and be able to revive their hardware).

Regards,
Buchan

I think the -10 to -18 update had some other security fixes in it. I tried to
look it up on Mandrakesecure.net but the webserver looks like it is having
trouble connecting to the SQL server right now.

The update to -21 removed the packet writing but also included the -18
security fixes. I would say that if you can't get -18, you should be on -21
because of the security issues.
