[Cooker] Don't you trust XFree86? :)

2001-03-13 Thread Mattias Dahlberg

Hi!

With XFree86 4.x you don't need an external font server. Why are Mandrake
still using xfs? Instead of FontPath "unix/:-1" in XF86Config you can add the
font paths directly. Much simpler, more user-friendly and future proof.

If this already is being worked on, or planned for, please ignore this
question. :)

IMHO it should depend on selected "usage profile". For home computers having
font server is probably an overkill. For business, LAN installation, I do want
font server to be sure all X-workstations clients get consistent fonts.

I've found that XFS has a real problem with large quantities of fonts,
solved by dropping XFS and going with the usual fontpath in the config.

Of course, Mandrake is overkill when it comes for house install. The thing
is, it opens port 6000 (which can be turned off from /etc/X11/gdm and
/etc/inittab by adding "-nolisten tcp") That way it will close most of the
port like port 1024 kdm, gdm port, and X-Window port.

What if there's a buffer overflow in the future and home network is open?

Can we have an install option saying that "Home/Consumer Install - no need
X-Window server to open port 6000 and X Font server" ... then "Business
install - with X-Window server open for remote connection" (or word it
according to your style... english isn't my 1st language...

H ! I always seem to get 'Could not init font path unix/:-1, removing

 especially fonttastic !).
