Follow-up,
Gnome2 seems to work for newly created users by following the suggestion
outlined below. However existing user accounts fail to complete the start-up
process. It definitely seems to be gnome-panel related. Here's the error
messages being generated:
**(gnome-panel:9510): WARNING**: Unable to load panel stock icon 'go'
**(gnome-panel:9510): WARNING**: Panel_window_layer not handled
GDK-ERROR**: The program 'gnome-panel' recieved an X window system error'
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib length
error.'
(Details: Serial 196 error_code 16 request_code 154 minor_code 20)
aborting...
These messages appears 13x and corresponds to the number of coredump files
created in my ~/ directory.
