Sorry, you can't have your cake and eat it too. If you want to try the
packages safely you must rebuild them for 7.2 but realise that you
don't
really have an 8.0 release unless you go through the whole update
process.
What's more is that if you rebuild some packages for 7.2 and then do
the
8.0 update process it wont update to the 8.0 version of the packages
because rpm sees that you have the latest version installed anyway -
then
things dont work properly.

You must decide - are you running 7.2 or 8?

It would be nice, if someone drop a mail who successfully updated this way.
As I mentioned before, I need a mostly working system. But I also want to test
Mdk 8.0 ...

Boot your 7.2 system, change to the cooker dir, and run live_update - this
might/should do it.

I hope that someone here has got a 7.2 version and will try the upgrade via
MandrakeUpdate. Or possibly via install image and update function.
Sorry, at this time I cannot risk my Mdk system.
About the non-Mandrake packages: Recompile!

Ralf.

Try this:

1. Upgrade sash
2. Reboot, and put this in lilo/grub prompt:
 init=/sbin/sash
3. rpm -Fvh *

Just hope that you don't encounter packages from 7.2 which contains some
symbolic links, and these symbolic links are changed to directories in
cooker packages. I have never seen rpm upgrading such kind of
RPMs successfully.

That't what I wanna know. Also, what about the packages I have
which are not part of Mandrake, and use the old glibc or something??? I
guess MandrakeUpdate won't be able to upgrade non-Mandrake packages...

[Cooker] How do I upgrade to cooker?

2001-03-13 Thread Daniel Serodio

I'd like to upgrade to cooker (I'm currently using 7.2 + updates),
but I suspect 'rpm -Fvh *' won't do it, since it didn't work for upgrading
from 7.1 to 7.2 . How can I upgrade to cooker without going thru the
installation program (which is a real pain)? Thanks.
