I'm using Netscape to connect to our Exchange server - seems to work just

What a nice mess ... Netscape is not Exchange client and SAMBA has nothing to
do with it at all :)

The best case is if admins allow IMAP access. If the problem is security - at
least fetchmail supports NTLM authentication so that passwords are encrypted
(really encrypted, not just obfuscated) the same way as normal NT workstation
does. I fetch mail from Exchange onto Unix server using fetchmail. I have also
seen rumors about fetchmail being (having been) ported to Cygwin.

I belive, there are some more IMAP clients that support NTLM.

But what is actually wrong with OL2000? It is not just as bad; is just because

The only thing I find wrong with OL2000 is that it won't run on *nix. :)

This is probably not the list to be discussing this on, as it really
doesn't deal with cooker itself, but since the thread has been started:

AFAIK there are no Exchange clients for Linux that don't work without
some type of intermediary server. Bynari Trademail has an exchange
client for *nix, but you have to purchase it, and I don't think the
client works standalone. HP Openmail, now defunct, had a client that
worked with Exchange except you also had to have an Openmail server. If
your Exchange admins have not turned SMTP or IMAP off you can retrieve
your mail with any pop/imap client. This does not allow you to do any
calendar, global address list, proprietary Exchange stuff, however.
I believe the mail client in StarOffice was supposed to work with
Exchange, but I think it actually used IMAP and not the Exchange
protocols, haven't looked at it for a couple of years, may be worth
investigating.
You could ask your admins to enable Outlook Web Access, then you have
slightly more functionality than imap through a browser.
Otherwise I would suggest VMware or some other emulation program to
actually run Outlook. It would be nice if *nix based desktops had a full
access exchange client, but I don't see it happening anytime soon, if ever.

I guess Outlook 2000 is not too bad. I had the M$ course on it yesterday. It
is absolutely riddled with little bug'lets and inconsistencies, which,
although not usually affecting useage, did make me laugh !

The reason I don't want to use it is that I sit in front of my Linux box all
day coding etc.. I a) have to remember and b) then switch to my Window$ box
to read my e-mails. Even if I can read my e-mails from Linux, how can I set
up meetings or respond to invites or see which other people are free when
etc.. Moreover I would rather use something like Evolution than a browser !
Our sys. admins. have told me that not 'all' the functionality is available
through the web interface and, in true M$ style, even less unless you use IE
!!! Sigh !

I have hunted at the Ximian site but can find no mention of Exchange except
to say that Evolution will support the vCalendar and iCalendar protocols and
M$ will just have to buck their ideas up and adopt propper standards. I would
just like to wish Ximian all the best in the current endeavors !!! :-)

[Cooker] M$ Exchange server

2001-04-04 Thread OS

Hello,

Our company has just moved over to an Exchange server and the sys admins are
being very unfriendly when it comes to giving access to things other than
Outbreak 2000 !!

Does anyone know if there is a Linux Exchange client out there any where ?

Information on this subject appears to be very thin on the ground ! I've come
accross things like vCalendar and iCalendar but it appears that M$ don't seem
very willing to support these standards (no surprises there then !).
Evolution has appointments etc. but will this interface with Exchange (it may
well do, but there is no help nor man page with the current Evolution !!!).

Thanks,
Owen

Look for TradeXCH as the client. AFAIK, you have to buy it, but at least
it isn't Outlook...

Until now, I never found any tools to use the calendar/apointments nor the
Public Folders. I can only retrieve the mail with IMAP using Netscape,
Mozilla or Evolution.
I actually missed few meetings because of that :-|
