Nope, no warning, only at the start of the partitioning part you get the
warning about leaving room (2048) for aboot (nothing about BSD label or a
option to create it). The error i got when aboot failed was simply that it
failed.

didn't DrakX warn you? (with "Can't install aboot, not a bsd disklabel")

ok, i'll try to warn earlier.

cu Pixel.

Problem is solved. In the past i only worked with AlphaBIOS and then you
don't need to do anything special with the diskconfiguration. However when
using the srm console you have to use BSD-style disk labels which i didn't
and therefore aboot failed.

Everyone thanx for all the help, system is now up and running.

p.s. Two tips/suggestions for the Mandrake people:

1. The extension cd is being refered to as ... (x86), Should be Alpha (is
only text)
2. As i ran into the BSD-style disk label problem the creation of the label
during the fdisk part, later when the aboot question comes it is already to
late to fix it.

Could you first have a look at /tmp/exec.log (switch to console 2 using
ctrl-alt-f2)

Explaination of what DrakX try to do:

the 2 commands used are swriteboot and abootconf.

or maybe try doing it yourself and see what happens:
% chroot /mnt
% swriteboot /dev/sda1 /boot/bootlx

or

% swriteboot -f1 /dev/sda1 /boot/bootlx

but beware, it may break things on the first partition (see man swriteboot)
(that's what force install aboot does)

then

% abootconf /dev/sda1 1

hope it will help, cu Pixel.

i now trying to get it to install but am getting stuck at the end where it
comes to getting the aboot part installed. When it tryes to install aboot
it gives a error message and then ask whether it should nevertheless force
the install of aboot. If i then afterwards try to boot from the srm console
is says it can't find a valid bootblock.

Any clues ?

cool, and BTW: according to compaq AlphaBios procedure is very
depreciated.

Never treid it but hold on, i'll just download a srm from ftp.digital.com
and flash it in.

Flashed it. Tryed it and now it works using the srm procedure. Still using
the cdrom floppy as the scsi cd-rom on the aha-2940 is not shown in the
device list on the srm console. Seems the AlphaBIOS install part still
needs some work.

Haven't gone any further then the partition screen yet, need to backup my
current configuration to tape first (for which i will have to flash back to
AlphaBIOS first *8^>).

[Cooker] Mandrake 71 Alpha (beta) problem

2000-06-16 Thread Richard Schiffelers

Hi All,

I thought i would give Mandrake a try on my Alpha. No success so far. My
configuration is:

AlphaPC 164SX (533) [AlphaBIOS]
128 Mb memory
4 x IDE HD
Adaptec AHA-2940
1 x SCSI CD-ROM
1 x SCSI Tapestreamer
Matrox Millenium video card

The story so far:

I created the first cd from the iso from ftp.free.fr, No problem there.
Created the root floppy from cdrom.img on the cd. I am able to boot the
system based on the instructions in readme.milo. It goes wrong directly
after the root floppy has been loaded into the ramdisk. The message i then
get is:

Warning: unable to open an initial console
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

Anyone any clue what the problem might be.

Richard.

p.s. The above configuration works perfectly under both Redhat and SuSe.
