IMHO the most failsafe way to retrieve perl version number is via $]
variable:

perl -e 'print $]'

Then parse the result instead.

What???

There is no perl-5.801 it is 5.8.1 and no matter what type of math you
use 8.1 is Never going to be > 801.

IIRC this is an old type perl error which cause an incorrect
versioning to be caused in the requires.
