I've been using a cable modem with Mandrake since 6.0 with no problems.
It's a COM21 modem provided by Bresnan@Home (.bresnan.net). I don't
do anything special...I just specify DNS servers, Gateway, my IP and
subnet mask and everything works like a charm.

2000-01-07 Thread WH Bouterse

The Modem itself is a ComPort 21
my ISP and Cable Modem Provider is anchorageak.net
a subsidiary of gci.net

I do not know their specific "protocol"?
I could ask if more info is needed,
just would need to know "what to ask!?"

This is the provider I have often lambasted
in the Linux-Mandrake "expert" group for
total "cluelessless" re:Linux but at least
they try. I am running a static IP and the
biggest glitch of late was their tacking on
some kind of net-bios filter which caused
my access to crap out every 6 hours.
A tech who runs L-M 6.1 at home :>)
tracked down the problem and vola' its gone and
I'm on steady now!

BTW They are running at least one Linux DHCPD
server now :>)
