Re: [Cooker] Royally messed up file permissions! (was: file commandhas b0rked permissions on magic files)

In case anyone is curious, the newer reiserfsck from Cooker was able to
fix my file system. --check ran and told me I had to run --rebuild-tree,
which repaired the problem.

Thanks to all.

Thanks much for the detailed response Todd. I was going to just
reinstall, but I have to back things up anyways, so I'll do as you
suggest. I'm not normally a kernel space bug reporter, but after your
words of encouragement, I will see this through and report the situation
to Hans (and hope he doesn't call me stupid).

Thanks.

Not likely. This actually looks a whole lot like possible hardware damage. If
I was him, I'd use a drive scanner to check disk surface integrity. Doing a

Ugh. I think I'll try to run badblocks on it tonight after I have a
chance to backup my $HOME. Thanks for the suggestion.

reiserfs has some problems. Try running reiserfsck on it. That will
 probably repair it.

I have from the 8.2 rescue CD. After finding some dangling symlinks for
some header files, it suddenly segfaults. Any ideas on how to find out
what's crashing it?

Not in my case. These are just /usr/include/gtk+1.2 and /etc/magic
directories (so far anyways)

Even better yet. I boot off the 8.2 CD and enter rescue mode. I run
reiserfsck /dev/hda7 and it goes on it's merry way, finding some bad
symlinks (mostly header files) and then it segfaults. Lovely.

I think I'm going to reinstall with ext3.

I'll read the read of your long post later :) ...I'm too upset right now
