[Cooker] telnet on 8.2b3 ?????, something very strange

2002-03-02 Thread richard bown

Hi , telnet server,
yes I know its a horrible thing and you all hate it as its a security
risk !!!
Msec lev med (3 ??)kernel 2418-2mdk
telnet client functions ,but the server is'nt or maybe is'nt
package manager says its installed,
This application cant be done with ssh , so its telnet !

I use the telnet server to redirect anything directed at 3 ports on this
machine , to another machine behind the firewall

This was perfectly functional on 81, and I have the same xinetdd
scripts and firewall scripts running Its not a secutrity risk to me !!

Could someone tel me how to get round what ever has been added, to
disable it
My actions so far are to remove both telnet- server and client
122-16mdk and replace both with 122-11mdk which is the version with
mdk 81that use to work
I have now managed to get telnet to localhost to function, but still
left with the xinetd redirects failing

firewalls have been disabled on both machines, and have no effect

I can telnet to the other machine to the ports that are redirected to
from this machinethat works

If I telnet localhost 8000 xinetdd should redirect to the other machine
on port 8000,
What happens is that I get connection refused (errno 111)from the other
machine
Its as if xinetd is adding something, but what I dont know and cant see
on a tcpdump on the ethernet link between machines

So far this is the only thing I've found that dos'nt work

I can use SNAT in iptables to do something similar, but its a pig to
setup

TIA BR
Richard

Add the local machine to the remote machine's /etc/hostsallow,
'man hostsallow' for details (I think, I dunno your email was hard
to follow)

Oh Leon I'm very sure

I'm dealing with radio amatuers (hams), to the majority telnet is new,
internet linking of bbs's is also new, and the rubbish ,microblows s/w
cant cope with anything later than telnet,, ie winpak
In most cases I have ipiptunels in use, that way they can use proto93
which means their tiny minds only have to cope with typing
 c aplace
Thats it 7 characters and a space

getting them to login and a passwordoh dear !!!
and as for ssh far too complicated

[Cooker] telnet server manpage pb

2001-12-12 Thread Fabrice FACORAT

It's my day to day. war against indetd !
Fron telnetd manpage :

DESCRIPTION The telnetd command is a server which supports the DARPA
standard TELNET virtual terminal protocol. Telnetd is normally
invoked by the internet server (see inetd(8) for requests to connect
to
the TELNET port as indicated by the /etc/services file (see
  services(5)).
The -debug option may be used to start up telnetd manually, instead
of
through inetd(8). If started up this way, port may be specified to
run telnetd on an alternate TCP port number.

 Hi there,

there is an update/fix for that problem. You should download the
telnet-client-krb5-1.2.2-15mdk.i586.rpm, the latest one and this should
fix your problem. I have tested this o a Solaris station and it works fine.

Is this package going to show up in the Errata for 8.1? So that 8.1 users

[Cooker] Telnet

2001-04-05 Thread Ray

I have done sereral install of 8.0 beta and have yet to find a place to
install telnet client and server during the install. Sure I can add it later
but telnet is one of the main stream programs for *nix.
Also the groups are nice but there should be an everything button and then
let me deselect items. Some people (developers) need to have just about
everything install and don't want to go back and install packages each time
they do something new.

In relation to this, maybe a better description for the -flat list-

Use openssh instead, frustrate sniffers. You can also use scp for much
of what FTP does. If you want access from Windows, get PuTTY and its
 friend, PSCP.

RE: [Cooker] Telnet message

2000-09-05 Thread Don Head

I know this is a stupid question, but I know
someone out there can answer this real quick.
Anyway I want to add a message to telnet logins
(ie when you telnet to my box I want it to say
"Welcome to " after you correctly login).
How do I do that? I assume it is as simple as
editing a text file. Thanks for all your help.

I saw a number of responses to this, but none
seemed very concise, so I'll toss in my two
cents.

To display a message at the login prompt, edit
the /etc/issue and /etc/issue.net files.

The /etc/issue file is displayed just above the
login prompt for users logging in at the actual
console of the system.

The /etc/issue.net file is displayed just above
the login prompt for users logging in via the
network (telnet and the like).

Be aware, the /etc/issue and /etc/issue.net
files are recreated from scratch at boot-up, via
the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file. Be sure to comment
out the recreation steps in this script.

To display a message after a successful login,
edit the /etc/motd file.

The /etc/motd file is displayed just after a user
has successfully logged in, before they receive a
shell prompt.

To run a program after a successful login, edit
the /etc/profile (for all users) or
~/.bash_profile (for an individual user), for all
users using the bash shell. There are other such
scripts for users of other shells.

The /etc/profile script is executed by every user
once they have logged in. The "fortune" program
can be inserted in this script if you'd like
every user to see a fortune.

The /etc/.bash_profile script is executed by each
user once they have logged in. If an individual
user wanted to run a program once he logged in,
this would be the place to put it.

Once again, the above are only for users using
the bash shell. If you're using tcsh or zsh,
read the man pages for the appropriate files.

Mandrake does have fortune, the package is fortune-mod-1.0-27mdk. This
program is only called at login when a user get it invocated in its
prefs, while i want to dynamically change content of issue.net and ftp
welcome file everytime it is read.

The file used is /etc/issue.net This file is automatically built at
boottime by /etc/rc.d/rc.local, in order to be kept synchro with your
current configuration. So you have to change the script rather than just
  the file.
For my part, i was looking for some way to change this file content (and

example) everytime it was called. Has anybody a clue to do this ?
