hi i think someone else has traced this to the update-menus command - in 
actual fact /dev/null now gets deleted.

colourization is fixed by setting up /dev/null correctly, it is the 
other error

//usr/share/xemacs-21.4.9/lisp/auto-autoloads:
   Already loaded

that still occurs

What do you mean, that even with correct /dev/null permission the java
colorization is broken ?
