Yup you should have at least a 2.2 kernel.
Whoa! Hold up Chmouel! The conflict IS = kernel 2.2:

# rpm -q --conflicts -p initscripts-5.27-37mdk.i586.rpm
kernel = 2.2
If you try to install this with both kernel-2.2.17 and hackkernel-2.4.0
installed you get:
# rpm -Fvh initscripts-5.27-37mdk.i586.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
kernel = 2.2 conflicts with initscripts-5.27-37mdk
but I think anyone with any kernel 2.2 and greater will get the same
error.
