E.g. in Kernel HOWTO you find this already in the Quick Steps. To find words about mrproper you have to grep the kernel howtos! And with external modules I would prefer to check my kernel configuration and then recompile. Another simple approach would be a file READ-THIS-BEFORE-ENTER-LINUX-SOURCE-DIR.txt in /usr/src Ralf.

tried that, then took the .config from /boot and all that.
