I got my hands on another machine, and it still reports VERSION file missing (right after probing serial ports) on current Cooker. A few other notes: - the new picture that boots from the network boot image is beautiful! - When it gets to select your language, United States is selected, but the box is scrolled below it. One click above the scroll-grabber (1/2 pageup) brings it into view. - After loading my package selection from disk, it selects aspell-br, and locales-br even though those weren't in my package disk. And a question for you Pixel: when this installation gets done, would it be useful for me to look over the logs and report anything interesting? Thanks, keep up the good work :o) __ Do You Yahoo!? [Cooker] new drakx install.
This is from a mirror made about 12 hours ago. I burned my first cd, not from linux yet ;o( thats next but I using cd-rw's. any way drakx is looking good!!! It would sure be nice to be able to select the individual packages that I wan't to install though. It boots into x ok now but it uses gdm instaed of kdm. the pixmaps are fixed. Thanks. and last but not least netscape still doesn't run. I tried from the console and all it says is segmentation fault ( core dumped ). on a side note the nightly builds of mozilla 5.0 are getting pretty good. the brower part works good enough to use most of the time. but the email and news is hard to use at the time.

RE: [Cooker] new DrakX features
Just tried another install with the DrakX stuff just put on the mirrors a few hours ago. Basically the same with two exceptions: 1. Allowed to choose packages now. Thanks. I still don't fully understand what the size slider is doing though. The screens are so slow that I wasn't about to try again with a different setting for it. 2. When it goes to install the packages, I get the following error message: error opening RPM database: cannot open file /mnt/var/lib/rpm/nameindex.rpm: Invalid argument I checked and the file is there. RE: [Cooker] new DrakX features
Just did a full install using the new DrakX. Here's how it went: Installation Class: Expert Usage: Development Choose size you want to install: Whatever the maximum was Why no ability to choose packages I wish to install? This lack seems strange for an Expert install. Screen updates were abysmally slow, about 30 seconds to redraw. X configuration failed to recognize my graphics card (Trident 975) and gave me the fb kernel. Graphics resolution was limited to 640x480. Then it erred out saying it couldn't find the fb kernel. It was installed though, I looked. The X configuration did work fine for me with the previous versions of DrakX. Here's the errors I got on the various virtual terminals: F1 Errors: Couldn't open RGB_DB '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb' Error opening security policy file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to: No such user 0. Gdk-WARNING **: shmget failed! at /usr/bin/perl-install/install_steps_graphical.pm line 737. F2 Errors: zsh: failed to load module: comp1 F3 Errors: Hard to catch as one line seemed to be getting executed repeatedly. Possibly that line is the reason the screens take so long to redraw. The line is: * running: cd /usr/bin/perl-install/po ; bzip2 -c /usr/bin/perl-install/po.cpio.bz2 | cpio -id en.po en.po/* Upon booting into the new install, I had a number of errors due to missing files. Didn't catch what they were. The penguin logo was missing from the login screen. I logged in to make sure that was OK and then rebooted into WinDoze to send this message.
