chmouel, maybe it would be a good idea to put it in
unsupported/9.1? this problem has much worried me in the past,
and "unsupported" is anyway meant for that (middle important
fixes or features additions that we don't officially want to
support)

[Cooker] whois doesn't work with .org

2003-03-31 Thread Luca Olivetti
[I checked this in bugzilla and found no bugs for whois, I lost some
days of traffic last week and apologize if someone already reported this]

The version of whois in 9.1 doesn't work with .org since the switchover
to PIR. Well, it works but the whois server has to be specified on the
command line and it's not easy since it has a long name:
whois.publicinterestregistry.net, and then it doesn't follow the
referral and the query has to be repeated to the registry that really
registered the domain.
Version 4.6.3 solves the problem
http://www.linux.it/~md/software/whois_4.6.3.tar.gz
and it's a drop in replacement in the srpm

Strange. When the way-outdated fwhois is going to be replaced, both
this current whois and bw-whois are checked, and it was found that bw-whois
record was even more outdated than the current one.. how come bw-whois
contains more updated record !?

Yes ... but it was too late for 8.0. I had no time to test this and it's
known that fwhois works fine ... so ... I hope that it will be ready for
8.1.

Yes, and it contains the most updated whois server list. bw-whois seems to
have an older list.. and fwhois only checks those domains registered
by NSI by default... too bad. So the version of whois aforementioned
is highly recommended.

Anyway, just my $.02

I recommend getting whois from

http://www.linux.it/~md/software/whois_4.5.6.tar.gz

It will automatically grab the proper whois server
based on country code, and then pull up the record.
Works great !
