Thanks for the advice, Jim. Hmmm, as I'm already using 2.2.17-27mdk I'd
better get the .17 from kernel.org.

You need to download the Kernel-Win4Lin2-2217.patch file, and then
patch the
2.2.17 kernel, and build your own. There was a message on the win4lin
mailing
list that reported that you could use the 2.2.17-21mdk kernel source
with the
following changes:

1. Install kernel-source and kernel-headers rpms from the mandrake CD
2. get the linux/arch/i386/kernel/apm.c file from the 2.2.17 kernel
archive (you can download that single file from my web server if you
like,
http://perfect.yi.org/apm.c)
3. Place that file in the appropriate directory
(linux/arch/i386/kernel/)
4. Patch the kernel with the 2.2.17 generic win4lin patch
5. Edit include/linux/tasks.h and change NR_TASKS to 3500
6. make menuconfig   select the win4lin option.
7. make dep ; make clean ; make bzImage

I get the kernel to compile ok with this method, but it doesn't run
correctly,
so I use the non-mandrake 2.2.17 kernel source from www.kernel.org.
You might be
able to successfully get this to work with this method with one of
the earlier
kernels. I do make the #5 change to the native kernel source, and I
also edit
the EXTRAVERSION line in the Makefile to identify my patched kernel.
