I ran into trouble using xosl, finally traced to Mandrake 7.2 beta of
last week, which at runtime removed the partition table's active
partition flag, which xosl depends upon. Result: Unbootable system.
This problem did not occur with Boot Magic.

7.2 beta download of this morning (12 hours ago) no longer does this
and is usable with xosl.

But, why on earth would 7.2 beta installed runtime ever be looking at
anything outside its own partition? Very scary!

I wonder if this would be a good thing to include in the DOS Utils directory
of the CD... True the bootloader has its limitations but for the average
newbie just now installing linux on a dual boot system, this would make
their life much easier. Does anyone else agree with that or am I just crazy
from lack of sleep?  =)

XOSL is known to support

[...]

  Linux (with Lilo)

-> Needs Lilo? strange, anyway:

Description:

Developer release 4. The install utility is only available for DOS/Windows
9x. When you do not have DOS or Windows 9x installed, you can use either
FreeDOS or DR-DOS. For both a floppy image can be downloaded at the
download area. When FreeDOS is used, you will only be able to install XOSL
to a dedicated partition. DR-DOS will also allow you to install XOSL to a
FAT16 DOS drive.

-> Beurk.

? anyway. downloading the source and issuing "make" at root directory
gives:

makefile:16: *** missing separator.  Stop.

-> fun. (all the famous TAB Makefile characters are, well, not TAB's..)

Anything more!? :-))

I reallize that the packages are frozen for the most part But is there
ANY chance of including this as an option for a boot loader in the near
future? Just stopped by there today and I must say this is a VERY nice
program to have. I've tested it on linux, freebsd, and windows with
excellent results.

Just a thought...

cons:

- you still need a real bootloader (like system commander)
- you need a fat partition
