You should have the following file on the diskette :
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root29361 Dec 8 20:46 boot.msg
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 866 Dec 2 16:23 help.msg
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 108 Dec 23 12:00 ks.cfg
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 6776 Dec 8 20:46 ldlinux.sys
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 908357 Dec 23 12:00 network.rdz
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 450 Dec 23 12:00 syslinux.cfg
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 498696 Dec 23 12:00 vmlinuz

You should see a "boot:" prompt, if not try to press enter key directly
or wait for the system to go on (about 7 seconds of timeout)

If it still fails, you can try modifying the syslinux.cfg file on the
diskette by removing the line "mode 0x101", save and reboot, you should
get a text only boot as before.

One gets very soon the graphic with the great Mandrake hat and wand,
takeing off the whole screen. Anything further you can only hear (but
not much). If you press any key, the floppy disk gets aktive.

The logo is a new one I have not seen before. It is a screen wide logo
with the Mandrake icon (blue hat, wand with yellow star) on the left 1/3
of the screen and "Linux Mandrake" on the right 2/3.

The loading process gets to exactly 4 dots:
Loading cdrom.rdz

I just fetched

  ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/MandrakeCooker/oxygen/images/gi_network.img

$ ls -l

-rw-r--r-- 1 root sys 1474560 21 Dez 20:34 gi_network.img

It's same as before with the '.img' from Cooker. You see nothing but the
Mandrake graphic. Floppy disk gets aktive on keystroke.

As before I tested with S3Virge GX, AMD K6-2 350 and GA-5AA board. In
a few minutes, I'll check this with ATI Rage IIc, AMD K6-2-450 and DFI
K6BV3+ board.

If you get nothing hear (read) from me, I've successfully destroyed
anything.

Done and one step ahead: I can see the text messages now!

"Boot failed: change the disks and press any key to continue" (or
similar, the loading of boot image before this had 14 dots)

Now, I'll replace the S3Virge GX with an ATI Rage Pro 4 MB, so I can
stay online while testing further.

OK, ATI Rage Pro 4 MB, AMD K6-2 350 and GA-5AA board is working with

Which ist the correct 'gi_network.img'?

Yepp! Your're right.

I've formatted a fresh disk and 'cp'ed the same image to it. Now it
boots and I get into the installation screens.

 dd if=/dev/fd0 of=~/delete.me

The 'dd' is necessary on my FreeBSD box only. On Linux, a

$ cp gi_network.img /dev/fd0

will do fine. :-)
