I guess because an innocent fat32 partition was killed by a bad Linux prog ;-) I said innocent because nobody ever asked mandrake install to do anything to this disk drive which was fully dedicated to windows Do you realise this is like... a murder or should I say... a genocid because millions of innocent bytes who were living on this partition are now dead :-( I tried to find who what was the reason for this war and if anyone still survive there, but after this blood bath : 1-Mr Microsoft Scandisk refused to tell anything and prefered to die 2-Mr Linux Fdisk refused to display anything about an "invalid" partition 3-Mr Mandrake Diskdrake displayed me a nice blue graphic showing the partition but refused to do anything on it Fortunatly Mr Linux Hexedit/dev/hdb and Mr Windows Fdisk accepted to burry everybody on hdb and recreate an empty :-(( fat32 But really in this story that was not Mr M$ Windows who was not happy ( no sentiment anyway ) guess who was not happy ?? a silly guy called bruno who had to reload tons of data and wasted a lot of time for that ... BTW I wonder how many silly guys like me on this planet still have a standard DELL computer with a Western digital 3,4 go disk drive ?? Would these guys try one day this fancy graphical install of linux where you just have to click and watch and. wait ;-) ?? On Tue, 17 Oct 2000, you wrote: > switch to console 2 > put a fat floppy in floppy drive > and type "bug" > > -> it will put report.bug on floppy and this file interests me :) > Is this documented anywhere? There are several partitioning bugs that I wanted to report, but had no way to replicate them so I didn't bother. Wound up hosing my entire 3 OS system because partitions apparently overlapped. Even if drakx had created a partition hdb5 at the beginning of the drive, it shouldn't have bothered windows, or would it?

No, I'm so sorry :-) it's too late . I needed a working system quickly, so meanwhile I have reinstalled everything with another partition layout i.e.: no more important data on hdb ;-) anyway seems that these 4 meg were free space at the begginning of hdb seems also this free space was existing before diskdrake run also remember this disk has been used in the past as a primary master with lilo on the mbr hope this info helps however if you really need to I could try when I have time to re-create the same situation, just let me know >

I can also see a small partition at the beginning of disks when using tools like partition magic. But this useless (?) partition is not seen as a first partition, all OS behaves as it was not present. Until now, this weird partition never bothered me.

Re: [Cooker] Install odyssey-rc Diskdrake screwed up fat32 partition
After the install of odyssey-rc (iso images from ftp.free.fr mirror dated october 12, 2000) my hdb fat32 was unusuable under windows and linux 1-config: dell xpsm200 pentium mmx 200 ide drives : primary ide master hda MAXTOR 90871U2 cyl 16383 heads 16 s 63 8,4 go hda1 win98 fat32 3 go hda2 to hda7 linux partitions slave hdb Western digital caviar 33100 WDAC33100-18H cyl 6136 heads 16 s 63 3,4 go hdb1 win98 fat32 3,4 go no linux partition at all on this drive (but this drive has been used in the past as a primary master with lilo on the MBR ) 2- circumstances: I simply run an install (expert mode) when diskdrake prompted I made a lot of changes to linux partitions on hda but no change at all to hdb when I used diskdrake no particular messages were dislpayed everything looked fine the same when I closed diskdrake no messages, everything went fine. it is only when trying to reboot under windows I realised that although I didn't make any change to hdb partitions diskdrake screwed up the partition table of this drive making it unusuable under windows and unreadeable by linux fdisk . windows scandisk froze when trying to check/repair this drive only windows fdisk allowed me to remove/recreate partition on this drive 3- thoughts the next reboot under linux showed hdb1 and hdb5 .. he he.. why hdb5 ?? I'm supposed to have only one partition on this drive . I then realised that for some reason there was a small empty parttion (about 4 meg) at the beginnig of the disk . this partition was not seen by windows, (may be seen by diskdrake but if so, the graphical representation was so thin (only 4 meg) I coukdn't see it !!!). may be this caused the problem whith disdrake . 4- suggestions: I feel something is still not working in diskdrake and the final 7.2 should not be released whithout fixing diskdrake first. by the way why can't we anymore choose to use diskdruid or fdisk during the partitionning stage ???
