OK - Under GNOME terminal it works.  But under Gnome when I choose from
the menu - configuration/other/Linuxconf - I get the window box with the
hand saying "You must be root to access Linuxconf" - same as in KDE.

Under kterm (konsole?) it fails with the gtk-warning as posted before.

Ok... you're using kterm.. can you try running it from gnome-terminal
