Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you on this. I tried editing the /etc/X11/XF86Config, replacing svga with 3dfx in the server designation. When I tried to start X, I got dumped back to the console with an error stating that it was an unrecognised server.

What?!? Check /etc/shutdown.allow and it contains all authorized users. Explicit: shutdown -a now allows the shutdown, but dumps into runlevel 1. Must type init 0 to shutdown the system. Yoann, only levels 4 and 5 bubba ;) 4) On another install to a similarly equipped system (using an onboard CL-5446 in place of the Voodoo and lacking a CD-RW, but otherwise the same), Lothar is still choking on the sound card. Reports device or resource busy when I try to test the card. sndconfig plays test sounds as well as can be expected for the card. But, at least I had X. Same card?
