the XFree86-3dfx server may be worse than the SVGA, could you confirm by
trying
both?

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you on this. I tried editing
the /etc/X11/XF86Config, replacing svga with 3dfx in the server
designation. When I tried to start X, I got dumped back to the console
with an error stating that it was an unrecognised server.

Ok, I did an hd install from what was the latest available at rpmfind.net @

 System configuration:
   P-200, 96MB, 6.4 GB, ISA v.90 Modem (PNP features disabled), ESS1868
 sound, 3dfx Voodoo 3 2000 PCI (16 MB), Creative 4224E CD-RW, Hitachi 8x CD-ROM

 1) If in time configuration, if I select America/Los Angeles, I am not
asked if my hardware clock is set to GMT, but I am if I Select US/Pacific.

Strange, should ask only depending upon what install class you choose, not
time zone :/ Pixel?

 3) Ok, boot into runlevel 3. muck around a bit restoring various config
files (and X still doesn't work after restoring my XF86config), prepare to
 shutdown and am informed:
Shutdown: No authorized users logged in.
What?!? Check /etc/shutdown.allow and it contains all authorized
users. Explicit: shutdown -a now allows the shutdown, but dumps into
runlevel 1. Must type init 0 to shutdown the system.

Yoann, only levels 4 and 5 bubba ;)

 4) On another install to a similarly equipped system (using an onboard
CL-5446 in place of the Voodoo and lacking a CD-RW, but otherwise the
same), Lothar is still choking on the sound card. Reports device or
resource busy when I try to test the card. sndconfig plays test sounds as
well as can be expected for the card. But, at least I had X.

Same card? ESS1868?
