gotcha I think I know the problem the installer didnt pass the option of 
hdd=ide-scsi 
to the boot loader that would probably make the difference.

i'll try it and post back. For some reason I just didn't relate it to the 
cdrom untill now.

IDE-SCSI emulation needs to be working for cdrecord to see the cd-r.

What does "cdrecord -scanbus" tell you?
