A quick workaround is to press ESC quick enough immediately after
pressing ENTER. But of course this is not a good way to solve such
issue.

in kde, klipper will allow you to highlight and edit.
I believe ctrl + alt + r is the command that will
bring up the series of choices (if it does not do it
automatically) and you can choose to edit from there.
