  hi,

in gnome2 i have problems with the taskbar ( i don't know the orrect
name for that, it's the bar at the top/bottom/left or right of the
screen )... concretely with the application list ( sorry, but i can't
use the correct terminology, i'm not at my computer )...

  the problems:
  1. the bars representing the different applications on the taskbar are
  random-length i don' t know why..

It allocates size dynamically.. Check taskbar preferences to change its
 size..

i'll check, but it's not like he make the rectangles shorter when
there's no free space in the taskbar... sometimes in one workspace the
rectangle is shorter than in the other workspace and i only have one
application in the first and the second workspace...

but i'll check the preferences...

  2. sometimes ( it happens mostly with mozilla ) when i start mozilla,
i see the rectangle representing the application on the taskbar... now i
open a new mozilla-window from mozilla, and i still see only one
rectangle on the taskbar, when now i switch to a different workspace and
then back, i finally get 2 rectangles..

It is called grouping.. Check taskbar preferences..
i'm soo stuupid :-))) i completely forgot about that feature of the
taskbar...

thanks,
gabor

You just want to set the tasklist's minimum width to the full size it
can be in your panel, then it will always be that size and the buttons
(you call them rectangles) for programs will dynamically resize to fill
the whole space - the same behaviour as Gnome 1.4. So for my 1024 width
screen with several launchers and a couple of applets, I set tasklist
minimum size to 650.
