Sorry, just seeing this conversation. The most likely reason this is happening is because GNOME cannot load esound. This is a pretty serious bug, but no one seems to want to touch esound (it is essentially unmaintained) . The solution seems to be to make sure that esound it getting started on start up. There is a checkbox in the control center under the sound section. Perhaps it's already time to switch to asd. -- J.A. Your call. )-: I see the same behaviour, except with KDE apps (since all of the KDE infrastructure has to start up, the speed is roughly even). In my case, I have a dual PIII 1 GHz with 1 GB of RAM, so memory and horsepower is not an issue here. This is one of the reasons that I've stuck with WindowMaker, the performance difference is actually noticeable. John
