There is no equivalent X command. I don't think running fbset while in X

which gives the same results in terms of resolution as no video driver

it is a 1024x768 one

the other attached to the mac picasso : VF = 74,9 Hz HF = 60.1 Khz
it is a 1016x768 one

the third card is sonnet ata tempo.

I have mol running on my Wallstreet. Same problem with the modules,
so I recompiled them against the kernel (2.4.18 from kernel.org
source) and have it running. Used the mol 0.9.63 RPM though, as I
couldn't compile the mol source. Supposedly need to update binutils
to do that, haven't yet got around to it.

My remaining problem with the Wallstreet install is X and console. I
can get a 640 x480 console with a 1024 x 768 X screen, and mol
doesn't fit the console screen though is fine in an X window.
Alternately, I can get the 1024x 768 console, and my X comes up as
occupying 640 x 480, mol on console is right at 1024 x 768. Would you
mind sharing your XF86Config-4 file?

Is that the only Cooker update you did? If so, I'm surprised it works
that well, as cooker has a new glibc, new compiler, yada, yada, yada. If
you want only new XFree on 8.2, I'd suggest building from source in 8.2.

Half-broken german keyboard

2002-06-26 Thread Stephan Haller

Hey there,

I've got a problem with my german keyboard after I upgraded XFree from 4.1.0 to 4.2.0 with the cooker packages. My apple keys are recognized as power-down button in Gnome2 (was previously the ALT_GR key). I'm not able to get the @ sign via any key combination (previously ALT_GR+L) and no tilde. Also my terminal keytable works in this was even if X isn't started. Keyboarddrake was not able to correct it. But QWERTZ is workling and also the german umlaute (äöü). Java recognizes most the time none of my cursor keys and DELETE/BACKSPACE key.

Any @ ideas how to get back my and tilde and java fixed?

Thanks

Stephan Haller

That's the problem. The console message doesn't reveal a lot, and the
there doesn't seem to be any pattern at all to the reboots. I have
reboots here too, but I am positive in my case that it is power line
related, as they generally occur at the same time as a local power event
(dryer kicks on, etc.) You'd think a laptop would be fairly immune to
such things, byt my experience shows otherwise.

I've also read bits on the MOL list about failure to service the pmu under
heavy load, which will cause a power down, but they said it was definitely
a power down, not a reboot.

You'd probably be better off with BenH's kernel than kernel.org if you
want to explore other kernel options. I don't know how fast Ben's work
gets into the main kernel tree. The last few Mandrake iterations have not
built out of the box on PPC.

... well, the way it is right now is simply not correct. PPC_altgr_compose
makes the Apple-key work as Super_L and Mode_switch, which is inconsistent.
And this is reported by xemacs. I think the Super_L definition is supposed to
be removed by antoher script in /etc/X11/xinit.d/ called `Mod_Meta_L_Disable'.
However, that one poses the wrong question to `/etc/sysconfig/keyboard': it
checks for `REMOVE_MOD_META_L=yes', it should check for
`DISABLE_WINDOWS_KEY=yes', at least if it was to cure the inconsistency
mentioned above.

This is the place where I have found it. However, to find the searchable

the module apm_emu sort of emulates the apm_bios, you should be able to
run X without it though, although you would probably still see that

What driver are you using in XFree86Config-4?. Did you try using fbdev?
Is the card pci?

Try:

cat /proc/fb
lspcidrake

I'm not familiar with this device. Does it normally resond to AT commands
like a normal modem? Have you tried just minicom or tuning the serial
settings with setserial?

It's in the module choices. Normally the installer would offer a list of
modules. A hard drive install assumes you are reading the install files
from an ext2 partition on a hard-drive, installing to another
partition(s). On older SCSI macs, both mesh and mac53c94 are used for the
2 SCSI controllers.

ttyS0/USB/mol-Problems MDK8.2 PBG3 Wallstreet [LONG]

2002-06-26 Thread Joerg Rambau

Hi,

I have successfully installed 8.2 on my PBG3 WS (266MHz/192MBRAM, stock kernel
2.4.18-6.1mdk). I have had before a manually updated glibc-2.1 YDL system
before (everything was working fine but no manual upgrades possible anymore
because of glibc.)

Thank you very much for a very attractive distribution that is essentially
consistent to what Mandrake offers on the intel side. Below I list some
problems I encountered. Some of them are yet unsolved. Many thanks for any
input!

Good in MDK8.2:

* fast & stable
* really nice configuration tools (i.p. Software Manager, Printer Manager),
actually the first ones I really prefer over unix style hacking.

Solved Problems (that might make it into the FAQ):

[1] xemacs complained about inconsistent modifier maps. The culprit is
the compose key setting in `/etc/X11/xinit.d/PPC_altgr_compose'.
[Solution:] I changed `/etc/X11/xinit.d/PPC_altgr_compose to use the enter
key for `Compose' in mod3 instead of the Apple key for `Mode_switch Compose'
(that key is already in mod4 under the name `Super_L').

[2] It was not at all clear how to install the production kernel 2.4.18-6.1mdk
on the MacOS side on a BootX system because in the installation kernel there
has neither hfs nor cdrom support included. I have read here that one of the
initrd files is the right kernel: not easy to guess.

[Solution:] Fortunately I have a floppy disk drive, and mcopy worked. So I
could copy the kernel from /boot on the linux side to the MacOS side by
  floppy.

[3] No devfsd running.

[Solution:] 'devfsd=mount' needs to be in the kernel parameters on old-world
  machines. (Thanks to this list.)

[4] wvdial can screw up your netconf ppp configuration.

The internal modem is recognized and can be configured to dial into an ISP
by netconf and /sbin/ifup ppp0. However, installing wvdial made this
unusable: if wvdial is installed then netconf will use it (in
  /etc/ppp/peers/ppp0 `chat' ist replaced by a corresponding `wvdial' command
that does not work properly on my machine.) It seems wvdialconf did not
succeed in producing a working configuration file.

[Solution:] deinstall wvdial, delete /etc/ppp/peers/pp0 and reconfigure in
netconf. (Note that also the drake tool was failing in the presence of a
`/etc/ppp/peers/ppp0' with wvdial because it essentially calls `/sbin/ifup
  ppp0')

Unsolved Problems:

[1] I own a Zyxel ISDN terminal adapter that can be used like a modem. I used
to operate it on `/dev/ttyS0' (printer/modem port). This port does not
connect the powerbook to the TA anymore, it is dead or misconfigured. Any
signal sent to the TA would formerly cause the display backlight to switch on.
No reaction for my system now. Init commands don't reach the TA.
I would like to use it because it is faster (128k) than the internal modem
  (56k).

  [Attempts:]
  - checked port under MacOS: okay.
  - checked for `alias serial macserial' in /etc/modules.conf: yes.
  - checked the output of macserial: ttyS{0,1,2} all recognized
  - stopped irda service, removed irda module: still not working

[2] I can connect to the TA via USB Cardbus. Then the TA can be used to dial
into the ISP. The routes and name servers are set correctly and I can use
e.g. ssh. However, I cannot use the imap or http protocols: `could not
connect' (imap) or an infinite `retrieving site ...' (http) are the result.

  [Attempts:]
  - I have already tried various options for ppp: no success
  - switched off hardware compression at the TA: no success

[3] I cannot get mol to run: white screen after the startboing.
I have the -rw -boot flag set on my main MacOS partition and I
use MacOS 8.6 with the ROM image from the MacOS ROM Update.

  [Attempts:]
  - used the kmods fitting the version of the kernel: did not help.

Any clues to the unsolved problems?

Thanks in advance,
Joerg Rambau

the choice is given when the install is searching for the CDRom.
on my ppc 9500, where i do have to CDRom drive attached one over the
internal scsi bus (mesh) the other on the external (mac53c94), the CDRom
for install being in the first one, i had first to choose mesh without
any argument, mac53c94 being done afterwards automatically...

I still register several crashes and reboots

2002-06-26 Thread Miguel Beccari

This is not my first post about kernel crashing (see old posts as:
spontaneous reboots).

However now I have some more information to provide you. So I hope it
could help to determinate the problem that many people have.

First: the hardware

cpu
: 740/750
temperature : 39 C (uncalibrated)
clock
: 300MHz
revision
: 2.2 (pvr 0008 0202)
bogomips
: 598.01
machine
: PowerMac1,1
motherboard
: PowerMac1,1 MacRISC Power Macintosh
L2 cache: 512K unified
memory
: 96MB
pmac-generation
: NewWorld

Second: the kernel

Linux serverg3 2.4.18-6.1mdk #1 lun giu 24 07:53:06 CEST 2002 ppc

Third: the facts

I upgraded from 8.0 to 8.2 PPC hoping that the crash/reboot problem will
solve: well, it still persists.

One or 2 times I could see the error on the monitor (it was months I was
trying to see it, because when the crash happens the machine reboots
by itself and no messages in the logs).

The error said something like:
"Machine check in kernel mode
Caused by (from SRR1=41000): Transfer error
"
... could not read ...

"Altivec error"

 could not read...

So it seems to be something about altivec.

Yesterday I recompiled the kernel *without* altivec support (my G3 does
not have altivec).

Today the new crash with the same error.

My next step is to leave mdk kernel and recompile the unpatched one from
kernel.org

Has someone an idea about this ?

Note that the crash is rare: it can crash in 24 hours or in 25 days.

Hoping my informations can be helpful,

Miguel Beccari

[ppc 9500]

2002-06-26 Thread Yvon Thoraval

i did a complete successfull re-install of the mandrake 8.2 distro,
howver at reboot, i don't get X.

the file /var/log/XFree86.0.log gives an error :

Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such device)

i thought bios was related to i386 or the like ???

after that, their is a search over the PCI bus without any message
speaking about video card nor video screen.

what can i do in such a situation ?

Re: Installing on PowerMac 7600 - no CDROM found

2002-06-26 Thread Jeroen Diederen

I used the 2.2 kernel because I saw strange lines on my monitor during installation,
the screen was completely disrupted. I will try once again with a 2.4 kernel
tonight. Where can I choose this
mac53c94 ? Also there where I choose the mesh.o ? I should probably first select the
mac53c94 driver because if I first choose mesh.o, it will continue with the
installation without having the opportunity to select the mac53c94 driver. What do
you think Stew ?
