That iBook optimized kernel is my work and in fact it's nothing more
than a benh kernel with an iBook optimized .config file, ripping out
all the unnecessary stuff you will find in distro's default kernels.

As I know from my work on gentoo kernels, there should be no major
trouble on applying XFS patches to a benh kernel.

You should try this again using the SAME compiler version on both machines.
gcc 2.95 is known to run circles around 3.x on the same machine, as 3.x had a
full API change and is now waaay slower than gcc 2.95, though it produces
faster and smaller binaries.

Well, we also code MS Word filters for free (in AbiWord, KOffice, OpenOffice,
etc.), thus enlarging the evil circle of MS products. Why we do this? Because
a lot of people need to open MS Word documents. The same way, a lot of people
need to be able to see Flash animations. I can live very well without it
myself, but for other people it might be a good reason not to consider Linux
on PPC and rather use OS X... So better have it under an NDA than not at
all...

Yes, I conceive that for Mdk, it would be a good thing, however, it would make
the plugin "unavailable" for all the PPC Linux users that do not use Mandrake
as their distribution... Of course they could still sign up with the Mdk
club, but well..., that's not the spirit of having multiple distributions
available :)

Well, I knew of that one, Stew and me have played around a bit with it,
however it's pretty outdated (Flash 3) and also tends to crash all over
Mozilla or if you try to load flash animations with sound... It'd need a real
big overhaul, but it may be a good starting point for a free solution...

Re: Flash Player for PPC

2002-09-05 Thread Olivier Reisch

Hello,

Just to throw in my 2 cents... I am the current head editor of
www.imaclinux.net, one of the major PPC Linux sites.

First, let's be said that the PPC Linux market seems to be moving and not that
tiny as many people may think. I don't have any exact figures either, but the
fact that our site gets a few hundred thousand hits a month indicates that
there has to be a larger user base at least interested in Linux on PPC
machines and thus also in a usable Flash plugin.

So far the PPC community already has undergone attempts to convince Macromedia
of the utility of such a PPC port of their Linux flash plugin, without
success. As you noted, Nick, they also seem to neglect the x86 version.

So there's only little hope that another attempt at Macromedia will change
anything.

A possibility could be to offer them to port the x86 plugin on our own, if
necessary under a NDA.

Another way to convince them could be to have Mandrake talk to them and offer
a port as premium software in the Mdk club, if necessary against a fee to
Macromedia (like with some other premium software, like Star Office...)

Of course, that'd be the worst possible solution. A final try could be to code
our own open source flash plugin. As far as that is concerned, we'd need some
skilled developers to handle that and above all clear legal issues first...

Greetings,
Olivier Reisch

Just as a note:

The Radeon Sleep bug is due to the Radeon chip, which does not respond
correctly to the current kernel PMU calls. Kernel hackers such as BenH are
working on it, but the bug has not been fully resolved yet.

So for now, the best recommendation is to disable pmud and not use sleep
features on Radeon based machines until a kernel with a solution to fix it is
available.

It's probably the same. Besides, for general information, there is NO way yet

I may be wrong here, but isn't a blue g3 newworld and thus should use yaboot
as boot loader? BootX is known to cause a "black screen" on newworld machines
with OS9 or later installed.

AFAIK, Mdk 8.2 won't work on a 6100 out of the box anyway, because it's a
NuBus based machine and thus needs a special kernel. Information about this

Hello,

That's a nice initiative. However, it's not the first one, and so far, noone

write a driver on our own or giving out source code or a binary to make it
work.

Re: Problem with iBook2 modem - help!!

Hello,

I am sorry to disapoint you, but Apple put a so called "soft modem" into
their latest iBooks which require special software drivers to function.
(read: they are not hayes compliant)

Neither Conexant nor Apple have provided any specs on the modem so far for us
to code up a linux driver for those modems. And it is not sure we will ever
be able to.

So, sorry, but for now, you won't be able to use the internal modem.

Did you verify the md5 checksums on the ISO files you downloaded and the CDs
