Re: kernel install instructions needed

Tom,
You didn't mention which hardware you are working with, but there is a good
guide at powermaclinux.net:
http://www.powermaclinux.net/plain_page.php?46

The first paragraph says that it is for iMacs but that the steps should be
nearly the same for all newer Macs.
Hope that is helpful.

Re: Mandrake 8 on PowerBook G4

2002-01-22 Thread addyd

My experience was the same as Olivier's (2001 Powerbook G4, 667Mhz,
Radeon).
I did successfully install from the CD (both CDs) by finding my way through
the graphical install on a severly distorted screen.
--After you go through the install process 30 or 40 times, you can figure
out what they are asking for. : )
Have not yet tried the BenH kernel.

Was wondering if anyone with Radeon has tried the Radeon-SMP Support kernel
at:
http://www.ppckernel.org/kernel.php?id=12
(I have not yet).
Was hoping that between finding a kernel that supported Radeon and getting
the new version of XFree86 I could get video working properly.

If anyone has been able to accomplish this, with one of the new Radeon
Powerbooks, I'd appreciate hearing the steps. Thanks!

On my dec 2001 Powerbook G4 (667Mhz + Radeon + combo) with Mdk 8.0:

boot CD and :
install - install hang because of ati radeon video card (normal, not in
kernel)
install-text (from cd) - missing a lot of packages (never ask for 2nd CD)
install-text (from HD) - missing a lot of packages
install-text (from net) - falling in ftp time-out during packages install

The only method to me was net-boot and install-net-text.

But :
yaboot don't install correctly

Sol :
boot open firmware (alt + cde + OF)
type : boot hd:your partition;\\yaboot
choose failsafe or linux textboot (otherwise aurora hangs).
get and install linux-benh-devel-2.4.18-pre4-ben0 kernel
get and install Xfree 4.2.0 (or cvs 4.1.99)

Final : box working with X (1152x768 16/24 bits), audio (except audio CD,
someone have the soluce ?), DVD (sound not pretty good), usb mouse.
I don't try yet internal modem, irda and airport.

PS : I never succeed to install cooker.

Olivier.

Wow!
Yes, I am able to boot into the rescue image on the install CD.
That is encouraging. Now what does that tell us, and what should I do next?
PS-Thanks for the quick reply!
