Well there ya go. I pointed boot-device at tbxi and it boots fine now.

>From OpenFirmware

setenv boot-device hd:10,\\:tbxi

And I get the prompt again. I had set it to yaboot

setenv boot-device hd:10,\\:yaboot

Not realizing there was a difference.

Cool. Thanks Stew.

It's a two stage boot:

hd:x,\\:tbxi loads ofboot.b, which give you the choice of MacOS/OSX/Linux

When you choose Linux, it loads yaboot, which reads yaboot.conf.

If Open Firmware is pointing to yaboot, rather than tbxi, then you'll
bypass the first step.

You mean ybin.
ybin installs everything you need onto your boot strap assuming your
/etc/yaboot.comf is setup right.

Below is mine:

Open Firmware Calls:
OFBOOT.B (I think) asks you linux, mac, etc and:
Tells OF to boot MacOS, CD, Net, etc, or:
Loads yaboot which:
Loads Linux!
Try fiddling with /etc/yaboot.conf and running yabin

G3 Powerbook (Firewire)
320 Meg Ram
10 Gig hard drive
DVD

Took the plunge and clean installed from newest cooker. Ran gendistrib
etc... install went fine but now I can't boot into mac os.

Normally I'd get the initial prompt for Linux, Macos, Cd, I'd select for
example linux and then I'd get the yaboot prompt and happily proceed to
linux. Now, only the yaboot prompt comes up and I can't seem to figure out
how to get back to macos. I had a lot of trouble getting the bootstrap
partition to work... and after deleting it and formating it again, it seemed
to finally work, only I had to go into Open Firmware and set the device
manually... Of course, as I said, now I got no macos.

What is the mechanism behind that initial boot prompt? I haven't been able
to find references to it.
