I guess the next thing I'd try would be a BenH kernel, either from source
or ppckernel.org and see if the ppc optimized tree gives the performance
you expect. If it does, perhaps I can look at trying to merge some of
Ben's code.

Sorry, didn't get it at first.
I passed "linux idebus=66" at boot.
See the dmesg below. Still don't work, nor at boot, nor with hdparm. I'm not sure what
are the exact specs of this model (newbie to the mac world) but a simple 66Mhz at boot
is not enough to make the drive spin for me.

Oh yes I see it. These exact two lines.
So, is it bad doctor ?
Pills for that ?

I have not try any other kernel on this ppc.
After a little search, I guessed it was the same kind of problem that the VIA chipset
on PC (or also the AGP unsupported=1).
Solution: wait for a next version of the kernel.

But if you know a trick...

Did you happen to see this message in dmesg?

Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 7.00alpha2
ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx

Event though you don't have a floppy, some machines do, and it's kind of
tough to floppy boot a machine with a kernel with no floppy driver. It
really doesn't add much too the kernel.

Sounds like you're trying the right things. There is a file
/etc/sysconfig/harddisks that is used at boot time.

Do you get udma 4 with other kernels?
