x86 uses the gatos ati2 drivers, which we were also using in the last
XFree iteration, which I was told did not work at all with r128. I
reverted back to the XFree ati drivers. If this is true, then I guess the
kdm wierdness is an improvement over no X at all.

 Sure, send it over. Looking over the control-center and bonobo SRPMS, it
 looks like this problem is not new on x86 either.  Frederic has several
 iterations of patches that have been applied/removed.

It was not. ix86 version use ati2 drivers, which doesn't work at all on 
PPC.
