Re: [CnD] Appearance of Microwave Baked Goods

2013-09-01 Thread Will Henderson
I think you're right about this whole appearance thing.
I think that's why I'm probably more self-conscious than what I should be
when I'm around sighted people in the kitchen. Because of that, I've been
hesitant about doing stuff around them, even the simplest things which is
not a good thing.
I'm learning, by this list's members, that I really need to do more and try
more things.

 Hi, all.

I was browsing my old CND folder and found this site for microwave
 cake recipes.

The first thing this site says is that microwave cakes don't always
look the same as oven baked cakes. I understand how microwaves and
ovens cook and know that no microwave is ever going to give you a nice
brown topping.
But. . . if I make a chocolate cake and frost it or do a spice Bundt
cake and use a powdered sugar covering how different would it look as
compared to an oven baked cake? I've used mine to do cakes for a
couple of years now and no one has mentioned. .. even under their
breath, that the cake looks different, and I come from a pretty
outspoken family. Now I'm a bit paranoid.

Well generally, yes, I agree. But if I'm serving something to sighted
people, I want things to look good because most people don't have high
opinions of blind people's cooking abilities. I don't necessarily expect
people to see one cake and become completely convinced in our abilities, but
hey, it has to start somewhere. grin.

Kathy, that's just it. Mine taste just fine and are always moist and
usually done to perfection. I don't normally put anything on most of the
ones I make because they're Bundt recipes that are already very moist and
flavorful enough without the addition of a topping which is why the idea
of it looking different is embarrassing. sigh

I guess I'm going to have to find an honest sighted person and ask them
to really describe a cake so I know for sure if it's fit to serve.

I haven't done many cricrowave cakes to know re the appearance, but
would say if they're frosted you could get away with them otherwise
being ok, unless the texture is off. I've done an oatmeal cake several
times in the microwave that's turned out nicely.

Hi all,

I've done lots of cakes in my microwave. I like to use a bundt pan for this as
it is attractive and makes for easier slicing. Depending on the type of cake,
I
sometimes make a simple glaze to drizzle over the cake once it has cooled.

2013-08-29 Thread Lisa Belville

Hi, Colleen.

I've only used a standard 12 cup Bundt Pan and a Rose mold Bundt, so can't
comment on other sizes of pans, either.

I have a 1000 watt Sharp Microwave, and I can do a standard size Bundt cake
in about six or seven minutes. I just love that.

Has anyone ever commented on the appearance of your cakes?

I guess I'm just paranoid about how things look since I'm the only blind
person in the family who likes to bake and share, so I feel like things have
to look extra well prepared before I feel comfortable taking them to a
family outing.
