Further update on this: The name node version becomes 0.18.2-dev, while the data node version is 0.18.1.
I don't think I recompile the code on name node at all. The version number just got changed mysteriously. Anyway, I copied the hadoop code from data nodes to name node. The problem seems to go away. So basically my problem was fixed - just hope my experience may help find some potential bugs.
