A well developed search facility.

I searched for “Londonderry”, got several news items, e.g. this one (you get to
see the actual image too, which is very nice!) ….

Manx Sun, Saturday, January 05, 1878; Page: 8

NEW BRIDGE AT LONDONDERRY.—In Londonderry the new iron toll bridge which spans
the Foyle has been formally opened by Sir Sydney H. Waterlow, governor of the
Irish Society of London. Eighty thousand pounds were reipiired to free the
bridge; oue-half of this sum was contributed by the society, and the remainder
by taxation spread over twenty years.

Found this too, a county Tyrone marriage from 1817 …

Manks Advertiser, Thursday, October 02, 1817; Page: 3

[CoTyroneMailingList] A bear hug for a Glendermott man, September 1811 ..... from the Isle of Man newspapers

2020-04-11 Thread Dave Mitchell via CoTyroneList
(OCR version – apologies, haven’t done any spelling-editing)

Manks Advertiser, Saturday, September 21, 1811; Page: 4

EXTRAORDINA RY OCCURRENCE.

Two Gentlemen have lately arrived in the nei ghbourhood of Londonderry, from
New York, who relate a very extraordinary occurrence, which happened to a young
man that emigrated some years ago from the parish of Glendermott, to the United
States. It seems that the latter, accompanied by a middle-aged man, was
travelling through some thick woods, when he es pied a very large tree, on the
branches of which appeared a pathway to the top ; being struck with its
appearance, his curiosity prompted him to ascend its summit, which had been
previously broken off, and dis p layed a yawning hollow trunk; after having
viewed it, he was about to descend, when b y some accident he missed his foot
and fell into the trunk, at the bottom of which lay two very young bears. Here
he remained for some time before the old man had courage to search for him,
when he did, he was unable to render the other any assistance. He went, however
, to find a rope. During his absence the old bear came, and what must be the
sensations of the unfortunate youth on seeing the huge bod y of the ferocious
animal darkening, in its descent, his dreary habitation, which he mi g ht then
literally consider his coffin ! The nature of the place, however, rendered it
necessary for his frig htful nei ghbour to descend with her tail foremost, as
otherwise she could not have returned. Finding her in this posture, his only
remedy, he thought, was to lay fast hold of her posteriors, which so affri g
hted the bear, that she immediate l y ascended dragging him up to the top, and
her fear was so great, that slie fell off a branch and broke herTieart ; while
the other quietly descended, to the great satisfaction of his old companion,
whom he met returning with assistance. He has since, it is said, become
immensely rich

[CoTyroneMailingList] Marriage of James Cooper and Widow Keys of Strabane, Co. Tyrone 1810

2020-04-11 Thread Len Swindley via CoTyroneList
Hello Listers,
This item from Saunders News Letter, Dublin, reported an astonishing event in
the town of Strabane, Co. Tyrone:

December 18 1810
MARRIAGE – On the 9th inst. at Strabane, by the Rev. Mr. Hamilton, JAMES COOPER
to WIDOW KEYS, both of that town – the former is ninety years of age and the
latter thirty. The bridegroom, by reason of his debility, was supported by a
Gentleman Barber to and from the altar of Hymen, amid a concourse of three or
four hundred spectators, who attended to witness the ceremony, which was
announced by several vollies of musquetry. It is reported that another lady in
the same town is very melancholy, as she had foolishly rejected the proposal of
becoming his spouse. (Saunders News Letter)

Truly astonishing!

Wishing all a Happy Easter and a relaxing holiday and please stay safe in these
strange times,
Len Swindley, Melbourne, Australia
