Hello Rick.

Lots of Morrison mentions in the early BMD records C17th for St Columbs in
Derry. Symington's Civil Survey 1654 is probably also worth looking at.

My guess is a Scots-Irish surname with Gaelic origins, so don't be too quick to
assume English! In Scottish history, Morrisons had ongoing clashes with the
MacLeods ...

[CoTyroneMailingList] A bear hug for a Glendermott man, September 1811 ..... from the Isle of Man newspapers

2020-04-11 Thread Dave Mitchell via CoTyroneList
(OCR version – apologies, haven’t done any spelling-editing)

Manks Advertiser, Saturday, September 21, 1811; Page: 4

EXTRAORDINA RY OCCURRENCE.

Two Gentlemen have lately arrived in the nei ghbourhood of Londonderry, from
New York, who relate a very extraordinary occurrence, which happened to a young
man that emigrated some years ago from the parish of Glendermott, to the United
States. It seems that the latter, accompanied by a middle-aged man, was
travelling through some thick woods, when he es pied a very large tree, on the
branches of which appeared a pathway to the top ; being struck with its
appearance, his curiosity prompted him to ascend its summit, which had been
previously broken off, and dis p layed a yawning hollow trunk; after having
viewed it, he was about to descend, when b y some accident he missed his foot
and fell into the trunk, at the bottom of which lay two very young bears. Here
he remained for some time before the old man had courage to search for him,
when he did, he was unable to render the other any assistance. He went, however
, to find a rope. During his absence the old bear came, and what must be the
sensations of the unfortunate youth on seeing the huge bod y of the ferocious
animal darkening, in its descent, his dreary habitation, which he mi g ht then
literally consider his coffin ! The nature of the place, however, rendered it
necessary for his frig htful nei ghbour to descend with her tail foremost, as
otherwise she could not have returned. Finding her in this posture, his only
remedy, he thought, was to lay fast hold of her posteriors, which so affri g
hted the bear, that she immediate l y ascended dragging him up to the top, and
her fear was so great, that slie fell off a branch and broke herTieart ; while
the other quietly descended, to the great satisfaction of his old companion,
whom he met returning with assistance. He has since, it is said, become
immensely rich

[CoTyroneMailingList] Fulton - Windy Hill, near Donemana

2020-01-15 Thread Dave Mitchell via CoTyroneList
Dear All

Anyone researching FULTON at WINDY HILL, Donagheady, co. Tyrone (near
Donemana)?

Quite by chance, I have come across newspaper entries for EDWARD FULTON,
bachelor, of WINDY HILL (or possibly ALBERT JOSEPH FULTON), who died in 1957
leaving a will that was challenged as a “death bed will” and disputed by no
fewer than 14 cousins who also sought a slice of his £12,000 estate ….!

All I have is a listing of some 12 newspaper mentions (1956 – 1960),
unedited OCR search hits and showing fragments only.

If anyone would like these notes, please contact me directly on

Thanks, Guys, for the team work!

Ray Hawkins has cleverly pointed out that names and surnames AS TRANSCRIBED
in the National Archives Listings may be different from what was actually
recorded . Hence, for "Knox" there are entries under "Knose" and "Knor".
Wow! What a start to the New Year, I had not seen these ..

These images can all be downloaded, free of charge.

Also, by manipulating the actual image (..00xxx.pdf) number in the website

Urney, and shows original signatures for i.a. the Rector, Rev. James Jones
and the 4 vestrymen -- William Inch (?), James Cunningham, James Woods and
David Woods.

* And it is clearly "Galbraith Hamilton" who is one of the local
landowners, rather than "Gabbrath Hamilton" or "Gabbett Hamilton" (as
transcribed). See especially at

Re: [CoTyroneMailingList] Revision Books of Griffiths Valuation

2019-09-07 Thread Dave Mitchell via CoTyroneList
Dear Peter.

For the colour codings and dates, these are often shown on the inside cover or
on the first or second page of each revaluation book (these images now also
online at PRONI) – often gives a more exact date than in the actual townland
listings, although difficult to be definitive!

Cf. VAL/12/B/42/26B (1864 - 1880)

The External Cover to the book says:

Page 1 – Revised in 1866

Page 2 – Revisions, April 1872 (or is it 1873?), April 1874, April 1876

In the actual pages for the townland of Cullion (Donagheady parish), dates are
given as 1869, 1870, 1875, 1876, etc.

Griffiths clerks revisited properties every couple of years and noted the
changes. A different colour was normally used for each year. Sometimes the
years can be out by a year or two. The books themselves do have a specific
start and finish dates which are evident if you handle the originals. Typically
they lasted 7 to 10 years but some were for different periods. The changes in
the VAL numbers were usually because of population changes which meant that
some electoral districts needed split or moved.

Many thanks to Len Swindley for recently drawing attention to the online
Revision Books. I had no idea they existed. The coverage over time and name
changes have provided quite solid confirmation of aspects of my family tree.

I have noticed that the date of changes is unclear, being restricted to
specific periods of years, so the best I have been able to conclude is that the
change(s) took place by such and such year at the latest. Change sequences are
clear and useful. Sometimes the same book (going by page markings) purports to
cover several different time periods even though having different “VAL”
numbers. This creates a bit of uncertainty. The books themselves do not seem to
have dates. Does anyone have any comments in this regard?

Hello everyone,

My name is Tania Margaret Sharkey. I live in Auckland, New Zealand.

My father William Sharkey was born on 24 January 1917 and the documents I have
for him record that he was born in Strabane, County Tyrone.

My grandparents were Henry Sharkey and Mary/Martha/Margaret Sharkey (née
Brown). From recent information received, I understand they are buried in
Leckpatrick Presbyterian Cemetery. I understand my grandfather was born on 8
February 1889 and died in 1966 and my grandmother was born in 1885 and died in
1930.

I do know that my father had many siblings: George, Ann, Martha (Molly), Sally,
Harry, Florence.

I understand my father and his siblings attended Ballylaw Primary School.

I do not know much about my Irish heritage. My father was 63 when I was born
and I was 7 years old when he passed away. He did not leave much information
behind about his family.

If anyone should have any information I would be truly grateful. I am
traveling to Ireland in September 2019 to visit County Tyrone and the cemetery
where my grandparents are buried. I would love to find where Ballylaw Primary
was and if I can find the home where my father was raised (or area) or any
documents relating to the family.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully

Hi Team

I have recently subscribed to the email list so apologies if what I am asking
is not what this list is designed for..

My name is Sue Piper. My great great grandmother was Matilda Yarrow who
immigrated to Australia from Oritor County Tyrone in 1842. Matilda arrived with
her 2 sisters , Margaret and Eliza. Their father is listed as Mathew Yarrow
(bootmaker) and mother as Margaret or (Anne) Yarrow (née Nobbs as stated on
the death certificate I have for Matilda). I have been trying to find
information about Matilda, her siblings and her parents to see where they came
from ( if they immigrated to Ireland from elsewhere -Scotland perhaps??).

I have found reference to a Mathew Yarrow on the Tithe Aplotments register in
1826 for Kildress and was wondering if this is the same person. I have checked
John Grenham and there is no Mathew Yarrow mentioned so i have no idea when he
passed away - or why the sisters shipped to Australia in 1842 (seems for work
however).

I am travelling to Ireland in mid June but will not have time to get to Tyrone.

Hoping you can point me in the right direction?

Kindest rehgards

Re: [CoTyroneMailingList] Knox and Patton Families: Clady Presbyterian Church, Ardstraw Parish Marriages 1845-68

2018-08-11 Thread Dave Mitchell via CoTyroneList
Hello Marsha

Just to add another snippet to your Knox-Patton relationship (just in case
it may assist) ..

PRONI lists the will for Letitia Patton of Ballymagorry (died 27 June 1928),
the wife of Patrick Patton, retired farmer.

Under her maiden name, she is mentioned as "Letitia Chambers" in the will of
her uncle John Knox at Drumenny (died 3 November 1898). It would appear
that her mother was a Knox from a family at Urney (and also Drumenny), also
that Letitia was a niece of Rev. Robert Knox, Linenhall Street, Belfast, and
a granddaughter of Hugh Knox of Urney (lived at Stephenstown), the
longstanding church elder who died at Urney on 2 July 1852.

Should this help you, please do drop me a line.

Kind regards

There will be several further files that should prove useful, but those
above contain the greatest amount of data. And many thanks for your kind
sentiments; I enjoy receiving messages from researchers who have benefitted
from my submissions. Good luck searching the above records and regards,

Subject: Clady Presbyterian Church, Ardstraw Parish Marriages 1845-68

Dear Sir,

I would like to thank you for transcribing these records. From this
transcription I learned where my Great, great Grandfather lived in Ireland.
It continues to be a journey to find him in the US. Apparently his wife
left and returned to Ireland with my great grandfather and his brother, only
to die somewhere and leaving her two little boys with her Patton family.
Fortunately, the boys return to the US with and are raised and educated by
their uncle Thomas Patton. But previous history on the parents remains a
mystery.

Again many thanks for your excellent work.

Sincerely,

Marsha Heaston
