[Coworking] Re: Coworking in Thailand, Chiang Mai

2009-05-06 Thread d.activate

Hi My name is Daniel Mireault,

I'm one of the 2 co-founder of Station C the Montreal coworking space.
station-c.com

I've been traveling in South-east Asia for 5 months and I worked and
lived in Chiang Mai for 6 weeks. It's funny because I left Chiang Mai
2 weeks ago. I have 3 friends that live and work there. 2 of them have
a web agency and the other is a web freelance web designer like me.
I've been talking to them about opening a coworking space in Chiang
Mai, maybe a second Station C. They all like the idea. I will explore
the idea even more once I get back to Canada. I have the intention of
going back next year.

I agree with all the reason you mentioned bellow. I love Chaing Mai
and think it's one of the best place to live in Thailand. The one of
the problem that I see with setting up a coworking space there is the
fact that the Thailand government is really strict on foreigner
working there. Unless you plan on living there for a long time and are
willing to go through the complicated process of opening a business
there the idea of a coworking space is less appealing.

Anyways my partner Pat sent my the link to this thread and I thought
it would be interesting to get the discussion going. I visited a few
space while I was there near Nimannheamin road. If you want I could
get you in contact with my friends also.

[Coworking] Catalysts in Chicago

2009-05-06 Thread jasontgoodr...@gmail.com

Hi, everyone!

My wife and I are building a coworking community in Chicago with the
goal of opening a space by the end of the summer. (Name tbd) Your
posts have been a great introduction to the culture and workings of
the movement. We hope to contribute substantially as the venture
progresses.

I'm a career journalist (editing and design) who became interested in
coworking after I was laid off from the Chicago Tribune. While
establishing my freelance business, I sorely needed affordable
workspace outside my home in order to be productive. We all know the
inadequate options. I was one of those who thought I had come up with
a profound, new idea of collaborative, shared workspace—until I
discovered the right search terms! For now, I Jelly with Sean Johnson,
Brad Maier and crew at a spacious North Side coffee shop. Very cool,
inviting people.

I'm also developing a social media portal to ease introductions and
grease the collaborative process at coworking sites and cafes, etc.

Gretchen, my wife, probably saw the potential of coworking before I
did. ("Jason, you need to get out of the house.") She's my tag team
partner in this enterprise. She's also a bookkeeper and mom who has
been an actress, singer, IT manager... She will introduce herself to
the group more aptly than I can in the near future. She always has
great questions and thoughts.

Enough for now. I'm so glad this community exists. I'll try to give
even more than I get.

Thanks!
Jason Goodrich

[Coworking] Re: Coworking Newbie

2009-05-06 Thread WHERE MMM
Hi Courtney,

I read your blog and found your comments to very interesting. I would like
to invite you to join WHERE on Facebook so that you can get more of a feel
for the coworking community than your observation :

I couldn’t help but notice, however, that much of the information I found on
coworking came from “wikis”, twitter, or some other Web 2.0 tool.
Furthermore, the actual offline executions of said movement were typically
made by quintessentially t-shirted and flip-flopped, young, white males. In
other words, *coworking as a movement seems to passively be dominated by
geek culture.*
When I created WHERE (Silverlake/ LA, CA USA) I came at coworking from a
hybrid standpoint. I am very much into building community as well as
providing a space for freelancers and incubator business to grow.

I really do like your use of Creatives.. it is a concept that I came across
about ten years ago out of Montery/ Big Sur. And, it is one that I emrace
here @ WHERE.

I'd love to learn more about your involvement/ thoughts in bringing
Creatives.together.

[Coworking] Re: how do you treat "guests"?

2009-05-06 Thread WHERE MMM
Nia,

I like to think of it as not only a guest vs member policy but really
letting your members take responsibility of the coworking environment like
it were their home; make them responsible as a part of their own membership
level. In other words do what is reasonable and also within the general
guidelines that you choose to establish. Our policy at WHERE is that if you
have a guest or two great!! If you have a large meeting and all your buddies
wipe out the cupboards then when you return you should restock the items as
a courtesy...

2009-05-06 Thread Alex Hillman
Humorous note:Before our big party with Mashable on Friday, I ran into a
girl I graduated High School with. She promptly introduced me to her
husband, and whipped out her phone to show me a picture of her 11 month old.

I promptly returned the favor and whipped out my iPhone to show her some
photos of my 2 year old wearing some studley new clothes...
Yeah. That's right I showed off iPhone pics the new IndyHall.

[Coworking] Re: Coworking Baby Born!

2009-05-06 Thread WHERE MMM
Hi Julie,

When creating 'WHERE' (work/ lounge) in Silverlake / LA, CA I came at the
coworking concept with a community building / non-profit background. As such
I look to support many organizations and sub-communities who all can
collaborate as a collective within the neighborhood.

One of the programs that I created a long time ago was for local moms to
become trained in daycare and was supported through foundation support. To
integrate the present coworking shift with your select SOWKS spaces try
working around the current low peak hours of your coworkers and host a
dedicated mom's morning. Or on the days/ hrs when you are normally closed.

Additionally consider the added benefits to stimulate the local
economy by partnering with established home day-care providers which can
expand your niche market; helping incubate/ accelerate and stimulate the
local economy. (And could further link back to finding support from your
city & county programs and community foundations.)

Of course that is a very brief thumbnail response. Please feel free to

[Coworking] Re: Co-Working vs. Start-up Incubator space?

2009-05-06 Thread Alex Hillman
Take a look at what we've done with IndyHall Labs. (http://labs.indyhall.org
)
It's not an incubator in a traditional sense, because incubators self select
the wrong people more often than not (not my words, those are the words of
NYC Venture Capitalist Fred Wilson).

In a coworking space, people self select for the right reasons, and the
organic collaboration from community-powered coworking is ripe for a better
version of incubation!

Our members have successfully cranked out products, and made money from
those products, without us needing to provide all of the fancy amenities
that an incubator does.

I've got lots more thoughts on this, much of which has been written about
before:

[Coworking] Co-Working vs. Start-up Incubator space?

2009-05-06 Thread Franklen

I have started discussions with a local foundation about the
possibility of funding some of our co-working space costs to help
provide resources for some of their initiatives and organizations they
support.

They have expressed the view that co-working is only appropriate for
existing businesses due to the "cafe" culture of co-working. I want
to present them with a good argument as to why co-working is good for
start-ups as well. They think that start-ups need an incubator space,
well I thought why isn't a co-working space an incubator space?

If I am missing something here, will someone please let me know? And
if you have any good references for using co-working space for start-
ups I would appreciate any links too.

[Coworking] Co-working the work model of the future

2009-05-06 Thread Ralf Lippold

Hello,

due to my past work experience working setting up a new combined-
transport transportation hub at BASF/Ludwigshafen with Kombiverkehr,
working during the 2002 flood in Dresden and being an active member of
the build-up of the new BMW plant in Leipzig, I have lived in a work-
world often remotely and just connected via phone, mail, netmeeting
and other means of communication (other than face-to-face).

I love that kind of working, as it offers me the opportunity to
florish my strengths -connecting people, seeing patterns in processes
and behaviors, bring people to work in their most valuable strengths
fields- and I love working with several Skype windows open, being on
the phone at the same time and writing an article or answering an
email.

So I think this group is what I am looking for (unknowingly;-)) and I
love to read, listen and write to make world go round.

For the last four weeks I am working on a project called LockSchuppen
(http://mindbroker.de/wiki/LockSchuppen) which will open the path the
21st century of work. Have a look if you wish.

Best regards and see you all around
