[Coworking] Re: MBA student: Confused about Profitability of Cowroking?

2009-11-02 Thread Natha

Do you break even? If you go beyond break even, is it by much?
Yes we do, almost daily

Is there anyone who is experiencing growth even with the recession?
Yes, we have a strong growth of coworkers from september.

What are your membership plans?
- 250€ per month
- 10€ per day
- 7€ per half-day
- a free space

http://lacantine.org/blog/un-espace-de-coworking

Does being profitable have to do with charging for extra services?
No, we doesn't charge for extra services But we make € from events
and meeting rooms renting.

Most of all, is this a business that one should approach with a mind
frame of making money or with one of
community, or both?
For this part i totally agree with Alex's answer (sorry if i don't
developp my thought but my english to poor to answer clearly)

I'm an MBA student and I need to choose a topic to write a

I've researched a lot, and it seems like people have different
answers... a lot say its not profitable since its the community aspect
that's appealing, while others say it can be profitable if you do it
right (what IS considered right is the question?).

I don't want to start a repetitive post, but I would love to hear from
those of you who have experience with running/owning a coworking spot.

 Any help would be awesome!

[Coworking] Re: Coworking in Seattle-

2009-11-02 Thread felicity at cubes

Hi Erin,

Listen to your membership. Also, for us being near where people live
is very important! It has to be just a short extra for them to go
beyond
either their living room or the cafe to come in. Although I know
other
spaces that are right in downtowns away from where people live.
Our members can walk, ride their bikes or drive (but usually not far),
to get to our space. For them being near home allows them to get out
and actually grow connections in the community where they live which
is
an added bonus.

One thing we don't like as much in our SF space as our MV space is
that public transportation
isn't as convenient. Something to think about. We used to be 4
blocks
from the train and our members loved it as did we because we are a
green space.

Wishing you great luck. I will be up in Seattle the third week of
November, so
feel free to let me know if I can help in any other way.

Felicity

[Coworking] Re: MBA student: Confused about Profitability of Cowroking?

2009-11-02 Thread Cameron

Thanks a lot everyone. The general notion I'm getting seems to be that
you CAN make a profit, but not too much... right?
So the profit is capped (especially since there are only a certain
number of desks/chairs available)? Not necessarily a business to start
if you are only looking at the bottom line, since that goes against
the whole idea of coworking.

Again, thanks for the detailed info :)

[Coworking] Staff Pay

2009-11-02 Thread ourspacefortwa...@gmail.com

If you have a staff on board what is the amount that you pay per hour?

I have budgeted $35,000 for a manager (contracted) and $7.60 per hour
for assistants. Please note I live in Indiana - you can buy a starter
home, in a nice historical neighborhood for $80,000 or lower. You can
find a nice starter home in the suburban neighborhoods for $120,000 or
lower.

If you want to make much money in anything you need to expand your
business, and do it very well! If each of your coworking site profits
$100K and you 5 you can then do pretty well! It's about how you
relentlessly pursue your community!

[Coworking] Bunker Studios Coworking Space in the Mission District, SF, CA

2009-11-02 Thread shana

Hi,

I wanted to let people know about a spot in the Mission District of SF
for coworking. Bunker Studios is a space with cubicles and offices.
The basics are provided - internet, power, water, etc. This place is
not for the meek - no hot water and no heat - BUT the price is right,
especially in expensive San Francisco. It is a great group of people -
I have had a desk there for 3 years and I really like it - both the
long term folks and then people who come in for a short time.

If you are looking for an alternative to Citizen Space, check out the
bunker: http://www.bunkerstudios.com

You *mean* as an alternative to: Citizen Space, PariSoma, The Hat Factory,
Sandbox Suites, Out of the Cube (and I think a few more)! I do believe
Bunker Studies was part of the Coworking Crawl we had a few winters back in
the Biodiesel bus. Very cool space...if it's the one I am thinking about.
