Nice introduction page, you are inspired for sure. Claremont is an
awesome place for a coworking space.

I will be interested in the new paradigm as you create it.

Keeping an eye out for you guys over here in OC.

for the space, found him on craigslist and told him where the chair

We seem to be making progress on de-hyphenating coworking but in it's
wake another problem has cropped up.

I would like to lovingly redirect this group away from saying "cowork"
to identify a space. Examples: "I am starting a cowork" or "I am
interested in a cowork/co-work space." These should be replaced with
"I am starting a coworking space/community" or "I am interested in
coworking."

I offer that the term "cowork" should only be used when you need to
explain the act of coworking. "I am going to cowork today with my
friends" or "Hey, who else is going to cowork with me today?"
Alternatively, you can just delete the term cowork from your internal
lexicons and use the word coworking instead :)

Discuss.

[Coworking] Term clarification Cowork, Coworking

2011-10-05 Thread Angel Kwiatkowski

Discuss.

[Coworking] Props to Coworking

2011-10-05 Thread Chad Ballantyne
If you didn't see the Facebook/blog post, tweet, etc - here's the news
The Creative Space and Chad Ballantyne Honoured as finalists in Barrie Business
Awards 2011
We were humbled to see our name presented to the awards committee and we were
actually nominated in five categories. This morning was the Press Conference
where they announced the finalists. We finaled in two categories. The Creative
Space is a finalist for the NEW BUSINESS AWARD presented by the Strategic and
Economic Development Office of The City of Barrie. We share this nomination
with former Creative Space member Andrew and Emily Sorlie with Honey and Dear
Productions.

The big surprise was at the end of the announcements when they opened the
second envelope to reveal the finalist for the Arch Brown Entrepreneur of the
Year Award. This is a prestigious award, one that all business leaders in the
city covet. The presenter opened it up and said “the finalists are in
alphabetical order… (killer pause…) “Chad Ballantyne, of The Creative Space!"
and the other 2 finalists.;o)

We’ll let y’all know on Nov 30th when the Awards Gala happens.

Just thought y'all would like to know and each of you who have invested in
coworking and each other can share these accolades!

2011-10-05 Thread Gretchen Baisa

A happy note: the best part about this story - one of my members
actually pitched it to Mercury News.

The mood in our space was celebratory the day the story broke, with
members hi-fiving each other and congratulating each other for getting
a quote/their pic/pic of their coffee cup in the paper. Pretty amazing
stuff for a relatively new community.

Like a proud mom, I have to share the original link, because it has

Thanks, guys. This is helpful. Keep 'em coming!

And Mark, no worries. I get called Sarah all the time. Nearly as much as
Jacob get called Jason. We've dubbed them our alter-egos and have discussed
turning them into a comic strip. We'll keep you posted.

[Coworking] Re: Market research?

2011-10-05 Thread Josh
Hey,

I run a coworking space in Bozeman, MT. Our population is around
38,000. My situation is a bit different than most I think because I
was brought on after our space opened, kind of a cart before the horse
thing. So I never took part in the research. We have been open for 2
months and just hit 6 members. The market exists, you just have to
find them, I think everyone in this group will tell you that Jellys
are the way to go.

At our space we used
Administaff,
a PEO (Professional Employer Organization) to manage our payroll and provide
our complete HR administration (benefits, policies etc). At LiquidSpace,
we are also using this approach but are now working with
Trinet(same idea... a PEO... just a different
provider).

Very flexible. Very easy. Lets you focus on running your space/business.

Yup, we use Paychex. Used to use ADP, but didn't like that I could access
their web-based app only thru IE on a PC. I heard they've since changed that,
but nonetheless, we're happy w/ Paychex.

[Coworking] Two Grad Students Making a Go of it in SoCal

2011-10-05 Thread Sam Spurlin
Hey Coworkers,

I've been following this group for awhile as my fascination with coworking
has been growing for a long time. I recently started a graduate program in
Southern California (Claremont, to be precise). I'm studying positive
psychology and I'm having grand ideas about a new paradigm for what it means
to sustain yourself through your work and improve yourself with dedication
to personal development.

Without getting too fancy, a classmate and I are having a meeting tomorrow
to begin laying the framework for this endeavor. Our focus for the next
several months is solely on building up a community of interested people
that can help create this project with us.

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself to everyone and let you know that
you'll be seeing more of me around in the near future.

Also, for what it's worth, I've put up a small informational website that
I'm going to be pointing people toward as we try to develop this community.
You can find it at http://www.claremontcoworking.com. It's a work in
progress, for sure.

Thanks for the inspiration the past couple months and here's to creating
something awesome,

[Coworking] Re: Coworking in Rural Areas/Smallish Cities

2011-10-05 Thread the CoLab
A small group of us has been working together over the past few months
to create a vibrant, creative collaborative coworking space in Port
Townsend, WA - we're calling it "The CoLab" (Get it? Collaboration + a
creative energy of a Lab.) We are conducting a community survey and
are gathering some great information, momentum and support.

RE: [Coworking] Re: Coworking in Rural Areas/Smallish Cities

2011-10-05 Thread Veel Hoeden
Beth- Is there any way we could capture that group of spaces somewhere out
here? With rural spaces being a growing segment, spaces like Veel Hoeden in
Pella (town of 10,000)would like to keep communication between these spaces
flowing.

Thanks & God Bless,

hi,

Congratulations, the new space sounds great. However, as a coworker

[Coworking] Market research?

2011-10-05 Thread spatialguru
Hi all, I'm interested in any pointers or experience others have in
assessing potential market in your locale. Our city is ~11,000
population
serving about 30k people in our market area. It's a blue collar town
but I know a handful of people who are into tech, R&D or who just need
some co-work space.

Any tips for how to nail down some stats? What level of market
knowledge
were you armed with before your started up? Any other small towners
see
folks come out of the woodwork?

Thank you and cheers from rural Canada :)
