[Coworking] Kickstarter / Makeshift Society's Brooklyn expansion

2013-09-17 Thread Rena Tom
Hi all,

It's the one year birthday of our San Francisco space, and the Kickstarter
launch day for our second space, in Williamsburg. Hello, NYC!

For the curious:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/renatom/makeshift-society-coworking-and-community-in-brook

We're aiming to build out a creative tool lending library, since that's
what our members are most interested in. I love how diverse all the spaces
can be. There's room for everyone.

2013-09-17 Thread Alex Hillman
I've been a Zoho customer for their invoicing tool for a while. It's pretty
good, and well priced. Zoho's support is also generally quite good.

The problem I see with Zoho Pulse, though, is the same issue as every other
social tool: it's only good if people actually use it, and for people to
use it they need to want to go there. Realtime social tools like Pulse,
Yammer, and even chat rooms, seem to work a lot better in a context that
you can mandate that people use it (which is also why they're priced the
way they are). Compared to our discussion email list, our chat room has
~20-25 active members on a given month, whereas the discussion list has
over 4x that - and that's *active* participants. Chat room conversation is
lost on most people, whereas over 80% of our community actually reads the
discussion list in some capacity.

Most non-technophile normal people don't get excited about adding a new app
to their arsenal. So in my experience, success is a lot less about what the
app can do and more about if/how you can get people using the app.

Re: [Coworking] what are your thoughts on zoho pulse?

2013-09-17 Thread rachel young
When explaining why we use Yammer for our internal social network,
especially when explaining it to non-technophiles, I emphasise that we use
it for a variety of reasons and say something along the lines of it's for
things like where you can find out what you've missed if you've been out of
town, if we're closing for the upcoming holiday, and to celebrate each
other's successes, so be sure to post what you're working on, how we can
help, and what you're celebrating so that we can celebrate along with you.

Once I started phrasing it sort of like that, the uptake for new members
drastically increased. I positioned it not only such that it is where vital
info and updates reside (even though we also have other ways and places to
get that info, including verbal updates while we're catching up in the
morning over tea), but also to encourage them to be an active participant
on it in a very not scary way and prop themselves up. It worked for us.

Re: [Coworking] Re: Hosting a gallery showing

2013-09-17 Thread Alex Hillman
There's some amazing stuff in this thread - I especially appreciate
Ashley's insights having been at this for so long!

To toss another bit of experience into the ring: we've taken a bit of an
unusual (no surprise) approach to art at Indy Hall. Perhaps most important,
our art program is a full fledged subcommunity, created and run by members
who are artists themselves (on a spectrum of professional to aspirational).

I owe the full story of our genesis at some point, but for the moment,
here's some supporting material:

http://www.geekadelphia.com/2012/03/14/geek-of-the-week-sean-martorana/
http://technical.ly/philly/2012/12/19/indy-hall-arts-coworking-photos/
http://technical.ly/philly/2013/02/13/indy-hall-arts-community-works-with-coworking-neighbors-art/
http://technical.ly/philly/2013/06/13/second-saturday-synesthesia-indy-hall-arts/

A couple of key points that have helped our success:

   - *Finding a champion.* Our arts program (a mix of curated art
throughout the entire space, as well as 6 (+) monthly shows each year,
wouldn't be possible without a champion (actually a few champions) inside
our community who are *already embedded* in the arts community. Sean
Martorana - our lead curator - is a beast in that right. Be on the lookout
for someone like Sean. Someone who has one foot firmly planted in BOTH
communities, who can be a bridge. Sean is a curator, but that part of his
role is minor in comparison to his being a champion of the artists who
   grace our walls.

   - *Putting in a LOT of work to earn the trust of the art
community.*It's worth pointing out that my biz partner, Geoff DiMasi,
comes from an
arts background (MFA in printmaking, taught multimedia at University of the
Arts in Philadelphia for a decade). Our entire business/operations model
includes riffs on themes from the arts world. Even with that...it took
about 4 years after we launched for the art community at Indy Hall to take
hold because most people in the outside world have a mental block on tech
and startups when it comes to coworking. Helping artists see what they
have in common - and presenting our worldview of creativity, problem
solving, optimism, and love for Philadelphia - helped a lot with this
becoming more than a hang art on our walls initiative.

   - *Learning that most local artists don't know how to price or sell
their art.* Maybe this shouldn't have surprised me, but one of the key
benefits we've learned about in our collaborating with artists has been in
helping them be better at the biz side of being an artist. Having
experienced artists who can mentor them on pricing, marketing, selling, and
all of the other more biz-focused parts of art has made a huge difference.
It's actually been amazing to me how hard it is to get some artists to put
a price tag on their art, even after I've BEGGED them.

   - *Owning that we're NOT an art gallery.* We do take a sales commission,
which we're upfront about the fact that it's 100% reinvested into our arts
programming. Even though that commission helps sustain and grow our
efforts, we're able to look at it differently because the space itself is
already being paid for by community memberships. As such, we're a bit
different from most art galleries that we aren't motivated to sell art to
sustain ourselves, but instead, are motivated to sell art to sustain our
artists AND to spread enjoyment of art to members of our community.

This freedom has let us show artists that might not seem commercially
viable in a normal art gallery (which, in our neighborhood, often tailor
its shows and selections for art buyers instead of normal people). Many
of these shows have ended up selling VERY well to a more mainstream
community. Perhaps more importantly, through our arts program, I've seen
dozens of our members buy their first piece of original art (or in some
cases, a commission). *This is a potentially un-obvious of putting
artists in a space along side a community of people who have enough
disposable income to afford coworking: you're potentially creating a new
   community of great art buyers.*

This effect is magnified when artists become active in the coworking
community and people form relationships with them. Buying an awesome piece
of art from someone you know and potentially care about has a profound
impact on the meaning and value of that piece. Having done it myself, I can
say it's awesome to support a friend through their art.

   - *Our members are people who value art. *This may not be every
community, but art appears in the top 10 reasons that people join and
stay at Indy Hall. In talking to people about it, I've learned that it's
not the fact that there's art on the wall...but the fact that we've even
chosen for there to be art here is a signal to people of what we value.
People who value art walk in here and know they're

Thanks so much for posting this question, Andy. It's been helpful to
see
all the replies and to consider how the advice applies to our space as
well. At The CoLab in Port Townsend (WA), we've experimented with
opening
up our coworking and meeting space for our local monthly Gallery
Walks,
showing 3 photographers' works so far (over 3 months). We've chosen
not to
charge the artists or take any commissions on sales for these first
shows.
However, these tips are helpful as we plan for the future - when a
more
formal gallery relationship could be a possibility.

Port Townsend is a small destination arts and boating community
(approximately 9,000 people in the city limits) and The CoLab in Port
Townsend is the first formal coworking space in the county. Like many
other spaces, everything we do starts as a collaborative experiment,
which
we then use as a testing ground for the next great idea! Participating
in
Gallery Walks has definitely been a successful experiment so far and
seems
to connect us with a demographic that is ripe with potential coworkers
and
meeting space users, including many visitors who are looking for a way
to
move to this fantastic community and bring their telecommuting jobs
with
them. It's been a true win-win situation, allowing us to use the space
in
yet another capacity to support independent professionals (in this
case,
visual artists), allowing them to reach out and grow their businesses.

I'm definitely printing this message string for the idea file. And we
wish
you the best of luck as you test out your own unique version of being
a
gallery/coworking space!

Yes, thank you Ashley and Sam for the advice! We're definitely
planning to
set expectations accordingly for what we're able to offer, and won't
be
charging a commission. I like the idea of charging a flat hanging
fee
just so that there is an understanding of a transaction taking place,
but
we'll probably set that price based on whether the person organizing
the
show is a member of the space or not.

They're talking about running the show in November, I'll be sure to
report
back on how it went, and anything we learned in the process.

[Coworking] On/In desk power solutions

2013-09-17 Thread Sean Qian
Hi everyone,
It's been a while. Hope you've all been well.

Collins Collective http://www.collinscollective.com.au is coming along
and we're in the final stages of furnishing the space. I don't EVER want to
paint one of those lumpy, old school ceilings ever again. The things just
soak up the paint like crazy. Other than that, what a blast it's been! If
you're interested in the renovation progress you can check us out on
facebook. http://facebook.com/collinscollective
ETA till open = 1 week. Whew, time flies.

I wanted to get some feedback on power solutions for the desks. My original
idea was to cut a hole in the middle and then to thread through a power
board. Looks a bit tacky, but it's effective, cheap, (and I've seen Hub
Melbourne do it just quietly).

Then I came across these -
http://elsafe.com.au/products/power-and-data/indesk/pluto-desktop-power-and-data.html

Cool looking things, but only come with 3 heads. The main kicker is the
price though. $125 each... I've searched and searched but being in
Australia (and requiring Australian heads) means my options are somewhat
limited. Are there any other options I haven't considered? For a 5 man
desk, how many power plugs should I ideally have?

Thanks for your time everyone!

Cheers,

Sean
