[Coworking] Equipment / Furniture from Makeshift Society Brooklyn for sale
Hi friends- This summer Rena and I made the tough decision to close Makeshift Society Brooklyn after a year and change of operations. The model that works for us in SF didn't work as well in BK, and we were not able to pull it around. It was a tough decision, but we are closing BK to protect SF, which is healthy. We're going to be doing some more in depth reflection and writing about this in the near future (and will post here), but in the mean time I'm focused on clearing out our space. We've been able to sell 98% of our furniture (!) but we have a few items left that may be of specific interest to other coworking spaces. Besides, we'd rather see it go to kindred folk. Happy to make a good deal for someone here. Below I've made notes of the items and specifically why we chose it for our community, and what the experience was. Even if you're not in the market for our stuff, hopefully the notes are useful to someone in the future. EQUIPMENT WE CAN MAIL ANYWHERE IN THE US. FURNITURE IS IN BROOKLYN, NY AND MUST BE PICKED UP BY 10/28 +++ EQUIPMENT *(1) Bose L1 Compact PA System w/ (2) Sennheiser PG 58 handheld wireless mics - $750* This unit is awesome because it puts out great sound but is a single piece (with a well-balanced handle) and that makes it easy to set up and then toss back into storage. The wireless mic unit velcroes to the side so it too can go along for the ride. The L1 allows multiple channels, so you can have the mics set up for an event and still plug in an ipod or similar for music, without having to have a separate mixing board. http://www.amazon.com/Bose-Compact-Portable-Array-System/dp/B0028SPFFC http://www.amazon.com/Shure-BLX288-Wireless-Handheld-Microphones/dp/B00BRQ5C1I/ *(1) SonicWall 01-SSC-4976 TZ 215 Network Security UTM Firewall - $300* We used this instead of the FIOS box that Verizon provided. Does a great job of dishing out IPs in our space which had a high turnover of people (due to offering day passes) and provided the network which was then tied into Unifi APs. We bought this unit on the recommendation of network techs that we had to hire in after TONS of issues with the Verizon kit. Worked very well. http://www.amazon.com/SonicWall-01-SSC-4976-Network-Security-Firewall/dp/B007YEJA9W/ *(3) Ubiquiti UAP-Pro and (1) UAP (non-pro) $300* Purchased after consulting discussions here. These units created our wifi network across two floors in a concrete building from 1907. They did an admirable job and were relatively easy to set up. The admin software is pretty aggravating, but in the end it's functional. Power Over Ethernet is magical. http://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Networks-Enterprise-System-UAP-PRO-3/dp/B00DJERLFG/ http://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Networks-Enterprise-Unifi-UAP/dp/B00HXT8R2O/ *(1) Ubiquiti TS-8-PRO ToughSwitch 8 Ports $100* Originally we purchased this to provide POE to the APs (above) without having individual power injection units. After lots and lots of issues with the APs I decided to remove this switch on a whim, and immediately our issues disappeared. Frustrating that Unifi's switch and APs do not play well together, but such is life. As a switch on its own, this thing is perfectly fine! http://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-TS-8-PRO-ToughSwitch-Advanced-Controllers/dp/B00CXU1NHY/ +++ FURNITURE *(1) Molo Softwall in Klein blue $300* This is an expandable wall made out of a special coated paper. It's max 12' wide x 5' tall x 4' thick, but can compress down to something that's just a few inches thick for storage. We used it variously as a backdrop for speakers at events, to hide unsightly IT corner, and as a general space divider. Sort of hard to explain but here's a video: http://molodesign.com/products/softwall-softblock-modular-system/# And here's a photo of ours: http://makeshiftstuff.tumblr.com/post/128130078141/softwall-by-molo-800-100-polyethylene-non-woven *(1) Two-position Tête-à-Tête table from Heartwork - $400* We searched far and wide for desks that look good, are durable, and have leveling feet that would work with our wonky concrete floors poured in 1907. After turning up nothing good for a reasonable price, we teamed with Heartwork. They created these desks for us featuring double layers of ApplePly (very nice furniture grade plywood) that are pre-finished so they're nice and durable tops; white powder coated steel legs, and yellow powder coated perforated steel cable trays. Sad to let these go. Photo: https://instagram.com/p/9O99zbQyGs/ *(1) Four-position Tête-à-Tête table from Heartwork - $500* Same as above, but with four spots instead of two. Re: [Coworking] Re: Unifi AP users - to controller or not to controller
Glen, smart move with the music on wired connection to suss out where the issues are. To your question, we only have AP Pros, so that’s where the issue has been. Miguel, you’re making me think maybe we have too many devices on one AP. I figured that the AP would refuse new devices but allow all of the current ones to continue. But if you’re suggesting that the AP gets overloaded and freaks out, that could be our issue. -bryan --- +1 805 712 0311 (NYC, usually) @bryanboyer On May 24, 2015, at 5:59 AM, Miguel Calero mig...@cosfera.es wrote: I am really a fan for the Unifi AP and we use at coSfera (http://www.cosfera.es http://www.cosfera.es/) since the very beginning. The problems we have experienced with the APs that caused our wifi go down were caused mainly by my own laptop being a controller (so everytime the laptop gets connected to the internet the APs were provisioning), POE cables failing (we switch cables and everything went ok), two many devices per AP (more than 30 and you'll begin to experience problems) and router running out of memory (caused by a captive portal, so we switched to the mikrotik). Hope its help! El jueves, 21 de mayo de 2015, 15:20:19 (UTC+2), Glen Ferguson escribió: I'm about to go the opposite direction as Aaron did. In the next week or so I'll be swapping out my Meraki APs for Ubiquiti. I've had issues with the Meraki cloud controller not being accessible and, despite being configured otherwise, the APs prevent anyone from getting on WiFi when that happens. Back to the UniFi question, I'd like to know what model of the UniFi APs you're using to see if the problem is on a specific model or if it's across their entire product line. As a way of troubleshooting situations where WiFi is up but Internet connectivity appears to be down, I have our music system connected to the Internet via ethernet cable. This lets me do a quick check when someone asks if the internet is down. If I can hear music, the problem isn't with our router, modem, or our ISP. That narrows it down to WiFi or their machine. [Coworking] Re: Unifi AP users - to controller or not to controller
Thanks, Jonathan, Tim, Aaron. We're going to try an onsite controller and see if that helps Tim, to answer your questions: - Don't think Sonic Wall is running out of IPs. We usually have around 20-40 people, so even with multiple devices each, we have plenty of room on the internal network. - Not sure if the Sonic Wall is restarting this regularly, but I will check logs. Do you (or anyone else) have recommendations for some sort of connectivity uptime monitor? I'd like to run something on a wired connection to see if/when the connection to the internet drops. We're using FIOS. best regards, -bryan On Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 6:00:39 PM UTC-4, Bryan Boyer wrote: Hi all- Apologies for the hyper specific question, but I know a lot (some?) people here also use Ubiquiti Unifi access points like the ones we run at Makeshift Society Brooklyn. [Coworking] Re: Locking doors system
Does anyone have experience with a lock system for storefront style doors? Most of these wifi-locks seem to only work on a basic wooden door. -bryan On Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 9:36:58 AM UTC-4, Ahoy! Currently we are using keys, but this is a big mess:) We are thinking about magnet cards for locking doors (the same most of hotels have) and also that would be possible to purchase with them at our bar. Do anyone have any experiences what is the best system and maybe which company can provide us this kind of products, solutions? Thank you Cheers! *Tjaša Jarc* Ahoy! [Coworking] Sharing some essays on the independent / freelance economy
Thought I would share a series of essays I've recently completed that are relevant to people thinking about coworking. The essays were written for the Knight Foundation in the US to help them think about the ways in which our society will change when a larger number of people are working independently. Sound familiar? Written based on ethnographic research with freelancers around the country, as well as direct experience from Makeshift Society. Re: [Coworking] Has anyone experienced this in finding a place to lease?
The money we spent on a commercial RE lawyer to help with Makeshift Society Brooklyn paid itself back in multiples. They knew which proposed terms we could/should push back on, they had creative ways to get a better abatement or TI, and it was also just reassuring to have someone with specifc experience on our side. That last point is important: do not underestimate the emotional drain of the real estate / lease / renovation process. Find a RE lawyer who knows the business, and you can trust, and don't look back. Oh, our lawyer also sent us pie on opening day, so it's possible my positive feelings are the result of bribery. -bryan -- Visit this forum on the web at http://discuss.coworking.com --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Coworking group. We have one of these and it holds up to quite a bit of use, and toner/drums aren't bank-breaking: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004QM99JG/ At Makeshift Society Brooklyn we've got one of those Brothers and it regularly gets grumpy and refuses to be found by people attempting to print.
