[Coworking] Re: Economist Series on Work Mobility

2008-04-22 Thread Matt, Balu, and Java

It is good. Lots of info about architecture, work habits, and
adoption of mobile technologies. Read about strong ties and weak
ties.

...nomadism combines the autonomy of telecommuting with the mobility
that allows a gregarious and flexible work style.

[Coworking] Re: Personal Introduction

2008-04-01 Thread Matt, Balu, and Java

How am I going to make money doing this?

Here's what I'd say:

- Find passionate members
- Charge a price that shows your service is valuable, but won't be a
major burden (so members can afford to keep coming back)
- Find a way to charge by resources used
- Charging for resources is a way to allocate those resources (should
allow more memberships since folks won't pig out at the all-you-can-
eat)

creative environment.  His ability to negotiate lease details and
other essentials have saved us a lot in up front costs.  He is also
very cool and enjoys being part of a creative group.  I would go for
the entrepreneurial spirit trait more than just creative.  Also some
creative folks would don't get the coworking thing at all.  The
question they pose is how am I going to make money doing this?  Any
 good answers to that question?

On a positive note, the Doylestown, PA coworking group will be

My model is:
- membership fee
- pay as you go for resource access

Some operational details:
- charge credit card daily (no A/R, no slow pays, etc.)
- allow electronic 24-hour access

Community building:
- book club! pick the book to attract the intended audience

Cool logo department:
- cool, relevant logo, almost ready for unveiling!

[Coworking] Re: Personal Introduction

2008-03-23 Thread Matt, Balu, and Java

Hi Sara,

Funny, techies lead a lot of trends, don't they/we? Who would have
thought?

What makes you sense the atmospheric desire (cool choice of words)
there in Providence?

I will be happy to share my observations about Wichita's receptivity
to the idea. There are a lot of creative people here (as anywhere)
but the culture is not as receptive to outside-of-the-box thinking as
what I've seen in SFB or Boulder.

how he's developing his business plan.

I fully appreciate your guidelines for posting, by the way.  If
