[Coworking] Re: rural coworking spaces?

2011-07-27 Thread ourspacefortwa...@gmail.com
While I am late to the converation, I want to add my two cents! I
have a very unique perspective, as I have a back ground in agriculture
and coworking and have worked in very urban environments. Two of the
biggest challenges to the rural enviroments are (1.) How to keep young
adults on the farm to keep it the family and (2.) How to make small
towns cool. Coworking can aid these two facets via:

(1.) The family farms can achieve increased revenue through internet
sales of produce, whether it would be salsa, summer sausage or
cheese. While farmers can't milk their cows at a coworking station,
farmers can become members and have access to wi-fi, marketing advice,
etc. thus, it is important for the coworking sites to tap into the
agricultural markets, and assist young agricultural professionals with
their agriculture work, and even older generations who wish to hand
down the family farm. The key here is to be proactive about creating
a strong saavy tech scene that allows farmers to become members, and
utilize the knowledge of coworkers and the WiFi (high speed internet
is not available without costly satelite services in many places)
without an absorbant cost.

(2.) Rural communities struggle greatly at hipness! Young people
often leave for the big city for the arts and music scenes, yet some
of these young people yearn for the quiet nights that small towns
bring. The ability of having a coworking space that can double at
bringing an arts and music scene, via art nights, etc. to the area
provides young people with the nightlife they crave, without the
relocation costs.

Thanks,

Jodi Dean

[Coworking] Re: rural coworking spaces?

2011-05-13 Thread Angel Kwiatkowski
I think coworking is reaching a place that transcends office space and
doing work on computers. If you go back in time a little ways you'll
see that "coworking" actually came out of more of a rural way of life.
Entire communities would come out to raise a barn, finish a quilt or
shuck and put up corn. The ladies would have sewing or soap making
"parties" where the more experienced women would teach the younguns
the tricks of the trade and everyone would go home with a new dress
and some fresh soap.

The only thing that really sets modern day coworking apart is that we
engage in it with more regularity and not just around specific
projects but all day, every day. So, my question to you is what are
many people in your neighborhood doing separately that they *could* be
doing together?

Diversification of uses and programs is key. We had very similar
motives for creating our space and as I'm sure you know, community
support is very important, so outreach and a range of positively
impacting programs that get people in the door and telling their
friends is extremely valuable.

Good luck!

[Coworking] Re: Rural Coworking?

2009-09-02 Thread calebgd...@gmail.com

I currently own and manage a rural co-working space in western
Massachussetts. My name is Caleb Dean, my canopy business is called
Generation Sustain and we work with young responsible ventures, ideas
and development projects to get them off the ground. The GS Venture
Space became an opportunity a little over a year ago when a very
desirable space opened up in our town. We had been talking about
building some type of space that would compliment our work and goals
and we decided to go ahead with the project. We began thinking about
it as an incubator but after a few months we came across the concept
of co-working, which very much paralleled our ideas so we have adopted
it as at least part of what we offer. We tend to think of ourselves as
a hub for the positive and inclusive empowerment of ideas and
ventures. Our local market also also dictated that we offer more of a
co-working product since our first few tenants were already
established, one of our goals is to bring young businesses to our area
but to sustain ourselves we had to fill the space, and are happy we
did. As it is true with many individuals living in rural communities,
we have had to diversify to survive and are learning some very
valuable lessons.

Our space is located in the village of Shelburne Falls, MA. Shelburne
Falls is the combined centers of Shelburne and Buckland that straddle
the Deerfield river in the north western corner of the Pioneer Valley.
the combined population is close to 5,000. Our village also acts as a
center for the 7 other surrounding hill towns. We're a 30 minute drive
from the College and University towns of Amherst and Northampton, 45
minutes from the small cities of Holyoke and Springfield, 55 minutes
from Bradley International Airport, 2 hours from Boston, and 3 hours
from NYC. Were surrounded by many of the northeast's major hubs but
like you mentioned my home does not have access to broadband internet,
just 5 miles from my office. This lack of infrastructure was a major
reason for moving ahead with this project.

[Coworking] Re: Rural Coworking?

2009-08-23 Thread Gregoire Japiot

We are a bunch of people in France who have some related projects.
We had a first session about rural coworking during a RuralCamp (sorry
it's in French: http://ruralcamp.org) in Dijon, a city of about
200'000 people.
There is another RuralCamp in two weeks that will take place in a
rural area (in Jouhe, a small village of about 500 people) and we
should have a second session about rural coworking.
We should start the session with discussing about the organisation of
kind of jelly (http://workatjelly.com) in the village (some people are
still fan of this idea!), and how/if that could be an opportunity to
start a coworking place.
I'd love to propose at the same time a presentation of your Rural
Enterprise Accelerator Program Alan.
If there are some interesting stuffs to share after our session, I'd
be glad to share that here (in English :)).
