[CREATE] LGM2010: Stuff that you liked and stuff not

2010-05-30 Thread Marcos Diaz
Things I liked:
-People helps you if you have problems.
-Free coffee!
-Wifi everywhere.
-A lot of energy plugs.
-OpenRaster and OpenDWG.

Things I disliked:
-Tiny badgets (was easy to ask people names than read it), I prefer neck
straps IDs.
-Uncentered projector.
-Small conference hall (I understand this year participation exceeded all
expectations).
-My talk!
-Brussels food.

I want to know yours!

I can imagine there is a problem with "artists"; there are many that
would consider themselves more as coders (even if coding is an art, too
:P) I guess.

I would expect an ORGanization of libre artists, but I understand the point
about a more official/corporative/governamental name, I agree.

But I think is better to keep it short and avoid names like:
"FreeAndOpenSoftwareToCreateGraphicsWithLibreToolsAndEnviromentsOrganization"
that nobody remember after 5 secons.

Depending on whether audio projects (or other things like fabbing) will
be welcome the "graphics" may be a bad idea.

Is this going to be graphics only?

I do think "libre" & "foundation" sound and work well.

Something to keep in mind, which was discussed at the meeting the other

Not necessarily an argument against libreartists, but what would someone
expect from an organization with a website named libreartists.org?

[CREATE] icc functionalty in ghostscript, guinea pigs wanted :-), and other LGM stuff

2010-05-30 Thread Hin-Tak Leung
Hi,

We do have a regression test system where we test evey commit against
about 11GB of ps/pdf/pcl/pcl x1/svg/xps data we collected over the years (I
think the ghostscript people probably have one of the largest collection of
strange and wonderful ps/pdf... files) for rendering issues, but since this is
a fairly major change which took us 18 months to do, we'd really like somebody
try to break it...

So the slides are on (which includes a fair bit of other info I didn't have
time to go into), and a windows binary and a source snapshot:

http://www.ghostscript.com/~hintak/LGM_Brussels2010_Ghostscript.pdf
http://www.ghostscript.com/~hintak/GS872W32-icc-r11301.exe
http://www.ghostscript.com/~hintak/gs-r11331-post-icc-r11306-merge+tt.tar.gz

Please feel free to throw any strange and winderful postscript/pdf files
against it.

I'll possibly keep doing snapshots from time to time where time permits...
and of course people can go bleeding-edge with svn.

It has been fun to be in LGM, and meeting some of the most interesting people
(including tight-pants man Eric!).

I filed two bugs against a file I got yesterday from one of you:
http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691352
http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691353

The W3C guys asked about ghostsvg, which does exist - it is part of ghostpdl
(which started its life as ghostpcl for pcl andpcl xl then due to +xps and
+svg, got renamed) and you can get it from the the ghostscript web site.

Re: [CREATE] [LGF]Libre Graphics Whatever - charter prototype - about the name

Hi!

After the discussion we had today at LGM about creating an Libre
Graphics Foundation or similar, I'd like to make a proposal for the
charter. I've concentrated on aims and membership, not procedures. As an
umbrella organization, it should concentrate on connecting people and
organizing partnerships between its members. The member organizations
would actually carry out the projects. This would also keep costs and
membership fees to a minimum.

Ok, I'm expecting comments!

/Andreas

0 Libre Graphics

Libre Graphics is a term that describes the idea that people use floss
tools to create and distribute free content. (needs expanding)

1 Name
The name of the organization is Libre Graphics Network (TBD)
Network seems a bit bland and ambiguous to me. I think it's worth trying
to generate a number of possibilities, some admittedly not very good,
yet sometimes bad ideas lead to unexpected better ideas.
So if we begin to think of possible words which might fit into a
framework like 'Libre Graphics X', here are some of my idease for X:

Affiliation; Amalgamation; Assembly (or Assemblage - a legitimate
English word); Association; Cartel; Chamber; Coalition; Commission;
Committee; Confederation; Confluence; Congress; Consortium; Convergence;
Cooperative; Council; Ensemble; Enterprise; Family; Fellowship; Forum;
Foundation; Fraternity; Gang; Group; Guild; Harmony; Institute; League;
Legion; Mob; Nexus; Partnership; Posse; Service; Society; Squad;
Syndicate; Tribe; Troupe; Union; Unity

Again, these are just ideas to toss around coming from a thesaurus search.
